St. Louis Cardinals
The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched their first playoff appearance in 21 years where they will most likely face off against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched their first postseason berth in 21 years Monday night with their 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field and the Washington Nationals’ 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. This is the first time that the Pirates have qualified for the postseason since 1992 which was also the last season they had a winning record.
The Pirates are tied with the Cincinnati Reds who also qualified for the playoffs on Monday in the National League Wild Card. The Pirates hold the tiebreaker so if the playoffs started tonight, the one game Wild Card Playoff would be held in Pittsburgh between the Reds and Pirates. Both the Reds and Pirates are two games back of the division leading Cardinals. The Pirates also own the tiebreaker with the Cardinals as they hold a 10-9 advantage over the red birds.

The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched at least a shot to get deep into the post season and the Wild Card Play-in Game. They are two behind the Cardinals for the division lead and with six games on the schedule, still have a slight chance to skip the play-in altogether. This is a great story of course after the Pirates have gone since 1992 since last making it to the post season. Such a...
A.J. Burnett (Photo Courtesy of Jonathan Daniel/ Getty Images)
For the Pittsburgh Pirates, acquiring A.J.Burnett nineteen months ago from the New York Yankees was a blessing. On Saturday night in front of a sold out PNC Park, Burnett shined in what may have been his last regular season home game in a Pirates uniform.
There is no doubt that Burnett has been a key part of the Pirates...
In the offseason, Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett will decide whether or not he is going to retire. He will contemplate retiring this offseason, but if he decides to play one more season, he will definitely draw interest from his current team.
Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington says that they will do "everything in our power" to re-sign starting...
The Pittsburgh Pirates are headed to the playoffs for the first time in 21 years, clinching at least a National League wild card Monday night when they beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 and the Washington Nationals lost to St. Louis.
It will be Pittsburgh's first trip to the postseason since Barry Bonds, Jim Leyland and Co. won three straight NL East titles from 1990-92. Bonds then...
Starling Marte delivered the knockout blow Monday night but it also served as the ultimate bailout.
After clinging to a one-run lead all night thanks to exceptional pitching by Charlie Morton the Pirates' bullpen allowed the Chicago Cubs to tie it. Marte who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning hit a tie-breaking home run
to give the Pirates a 2...
I understand letting Jeff Locke start today. That sounds crazy in hindsight, but I really do. Locke has looked marginally better since returning from his demotion, and he turned in a gem against the Cubs last weekend. Brandon Cumpton, Kris Johnson, and Stolmy Pimentel have all been used pretty sparingly since joining the Pirates after Indianapolis's season ended. Using a rusty...
If you were at all concerned that the Pirates were going to be hung over on Tuesday after celebrating their wild card clinching win on Monday night, those notions were put to rest fairly early in this one. After going down in order in the first inning, the Pirates scored three times in the second inning thanks to a Marlon Byrd single, a Gaby Sanchez walk, a Pedro Alvarez RBI double...
The Pirates have won 12 games in September. Five of them have been started by Gerrit Cole. The Pirates have lost 11 games in September. Zero of them have been started by Gerrit Cole. Here are Gerrit Cole's numbers in those five starts:
32 IP, 24 H, 39 K, 10 BB, 6 R, 6 ER, 1.69 ERA. Opponents are hitting .212/.276/.248 against him with a .324 BABIP, which means that we don...
I recently bought a “Me and the Boys Boppin” tee to support the Pittsburgh Pirates in their battle for a 163rd game.
When it arrived and I put it on, I felt a strange power surge through me, one that imbued me with the quickness of the cobra and the strength of one thousand mortal men. I’m guessing it was the particular blend of polyester...
Pirates (90-67) at Cubs (65-92)
2:20 PM–Wrigley Field, Chicago
TV: ROOT, WGN
The Bucs look for the sweep at Wrigley Field today as they hope to gain ground on St Louis heading in to the final weekend. The Cards seem to be playing good ball again and a letdown seems unlikely, especially against the now-eliminated Nats and the Cubs this weekend at home, but you never...
Lest the Pirates enjoy their celebration too much after clinching a playoff spot Monday night Andrew McCutchen established a policy. We'll party tonight their MVP candidate center fielder said according to manager Clint Hurdle. Tomorrow we play.
Sporting a regular lineup the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2 at Wrigley Field Tuesday night. They knocked around Cubs starter Chris...
In baseball's modern era (marked by the rise of the American League and the solidifying of the rules in 1901), the Pittsburgh Pirates have won at least 90 games in the following seasons: 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1912, 1921, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1944, 1960, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 2013.
I want to thank the Pirates for last night’s win. Yesterday I said this, I’ll take any win we can get, I’m just so tired of these crazy nail biters. Thanks for giving me what I wanted!!!!! Francisco Liriano will get his last start before the playoffs today. He’s likely going in the one game…
Last night was awesome, but it's time to move on. There is still a division race that's undecided, and the best way for it to stay that way is for the Pirates to win as many of these last five games as possible. A good place to start along those lines would be hitting the ball more consistently. Chris Rusin starts for the Cubs tonight; his peripherals are pretty bad, the...
I hope last night’s performance put your mind at ease a bit. I certainly understand the nerves, this has been such a long time coming, but it’s such a longshot at this point that the Pirates miss the playoffs. This has just been a crazy time. Something we aren’t used to as baseball fans. Anyway,…
