As an expected part of the aftermath succeeding the Derrek Lee trade, the Pittsburgh Pirates have designated first baseman Lyle Overbay for assignment. The 34-year-old was signed to a one-year, $5 million deal this offseason, after the Pirates courted and ultimately failed to sign Lee. Overbay hit .227 with eight home runs and 37 RBI this season, in addition to playing poor defense. Lyle posted a career-worst .991 FLD%, compared to the league-average .994. The Pirates will now have 10 days to trade, waive or release Overbay, who will collect all of the money he is owed regardless of what happens. Derrek Lee will take over everyday duties at first base beginning tonight against his former Chicago Cubs. He will bat cleanup. Here’s the rest of the team’s lineup: 1. Andrew McCutchen, CF 2.
