Wandy Rodriguez After another horrendous outing, the Pittsburgh Pirates have designated starter Wandy Rodriguez for assignment. The move was necessary as the team lingers at the bottom of the National League Central and one disappointing outing after another for the 35-year-old. On Wednesday Rodriguez surrendered six innings in just 1.2 innings in the Pirates 9-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. ”In our mind we felt best served to cut ties because in my mind I’m thinking, ‘You know what? I’ve seen guys of his ilk pitch backwards and recreate themselves.’ … We didn’t feel that was our best option,” manager Clint Hurdle said. ”He’s healthy his arm is healthy. He said it best, ‘Sometimes you give everything you got and it’s not good enough.”’ Rodriguez was 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in six starts this season. He spent time on the disabled list earlier in the year with a right knee inflammation. With the Pirates struggling, the move was necessary in hopes of getting the starting rotation going. The left-hander was the weakest link in the rotation. His velocity had drastically fallen since his injury on June 5 of last season. He has missed too often up in the zone and has allowed 10 home runs. The Astros are paying $5.5 million of Rodriguez’ $13 million salary. Houston traded Rodriguez to the Pirates at the trade deadline in 2012. Both Pittsburgh and the Pirates will owe the veteran a full salary, which may be why the team held out hope this long. Rodriguez had a 3.59 ERA in 62 2/3 innings last season before suffering a season ending arm injury. Pittsburgh must now replace Rodriguez in the rotation with either Brandon Cumpton or Jeff Locke, both that has experience with the big league team. Cumpton is 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in two starts this season. The right-hander has dominated Triple-A hitters, going 4-1 with a 1.35 ERA. Plus Pittsburgh was impressed with his performance last season when called upon. Locke was an All-Star last season before falling off in the second half. He is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in Indianapolis. However, his spot start with the Pirates a few weeks ago wasn’t to desire, lasting 5.1 innings and allowing six runs. Cumpton seems like the most likely to help the Pirates, but either way Pittsburgh needs someone to kick start the rotation. With the exception of Gerrit Cole, Pirates starters are a combined 1-17 this season. The post Pittsburgh Pirates designate Wandy Rodriguez for assignment appeared first on isportsweb.

Carribuyin’ This Pirate Before He Walks The Polanco

It's about that time, prematurely balding men and four girl readers. Gregory Polanco is nearing his call-up date. He is basically a young version of Starling Marte. As of this writing, he's 22 years old. I'm hoping he's still 22 years old when I'm done writing this post otherwise I spent way too much time on it. He can be a superstar, which has me excited...

Andrew McCutchen rips pandas in ‘MLB 14: The Show’ spot

Francisco Liriano goes from Comeback Player of the Year to winless after 10 starts

Twins fans have seen this before from Francisco Liriano and now Pirates fans are seeing it too. Great. Terrible. Great. Terrible. Repeat as needed. Liriano was a huge part of Pittsburgh’s rise to the playoffs last season, going 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA and 163 strikeouts in 161 innings on the way to the Comeback Player of the Year award. And now this season he’s 0-4 with a 4.86...

Andrew McCutchen Says Pandas Can’t Compete With MLB 14 The Show

Game 45: Pirates 9 Orioles 8

OK, so, here’s the situation: the modem that gives me internet in my apartment is broken. I’ve been told that they need to send a serviceperson to my apartment to fix it rather than have me just drop off the broken modem and get a new one, because they’re concerned the wiring in my building has gone bad. This would all be fine, except that my lease is up on May 31st, the moving...

Game 46: Pirates 3 Nationals 1

The Pirates have certainly been playing a little bit better of late (they’re now 10-8 in their last 18 games, which is a pace that will eventually get them back to around .500, but not much of anywhere else), but a lot of the wins have been these crazy, frantic affairs where the starters melt down or the bullpen melts down and the Pirates need a clutch hit or a huge rally or something...

Death, taxes, and Andrew McCutchen killing the Nationals

"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Benjamin Franklin forgot to mention Andrew McCutchen killing the Nationals. Pirates 3, Nationals 1: Of course it had to be Andrew McCutchen robbing Anthony Rendon with a sensational sliding catch in the 9th with two on and two out to save the game. McCutchen in 31 career games vs #Nats: .397...

Nationals Go North To Face Pirates In Pittsburgh

After their storied season in 2013, the Pittsburgh Pirates (19-26) aren’t quite the Cinderella they were last year. The carriage that carried them to the postseason turned back into a pumpkin, and they once again find themselves with a losing record. When the Washington Nationals (24-22) head north to PNC Park they shouldn’t give the Pirates much leeway to climb back toward ...
