In any other year Norichika Aoki would have garnered a lot more attention, but to Aoki’s detriment 2012 gave us three great rookie seasons from Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and Yoenis Cespedes. But if I asked you which rookie had the fourth-best season last year, your answer had better be Aoki.Trout, Harper, and Cespedes aside, Aoki had the best wOBA (.344), wRC+ (115), and WAR (2.9) of any rookie last year. Among all players with at least 500 plate appearances his 30 steals were tied for 12th-most, his 9.4% strikeout rate was sixth-best, and his 1.28 K:BB ratio was 15th-best. Any way you look at it, Aoki deserved his 66th overall ranking last year. We expect more of the same this year.At a GlanceStrengths: R, BA, SBNeutral: OBP, SLG, OPSWeaknesses: HR, RBIPlayer ComparisonsBest-case scenario: Jose Reyes (TOR)Likely scenario: Alejandro De Aza (CHW), Ichiro Suzuki (NYY), Angel Pagan (SF)Worst-case scenario: Michael Brantley (CLE)Norichika Aoki 2013 Fantasy ProjectionMost xBA calculators...

RF Aoki puts in extra work for Brewers

When Norichika Aoki came over from Japan, he had his routine. He'd followed it for years, taking 1,000 swings a day, arriving earlier than almost everyone to take extra batting practice before games. While that worked in Japan, the grind of the big league season wasn't allowing him to continue the extra work without wearing down. The Brewers asked Aoki to cut down on some...

Brewers Tuesday: Gennett plays big

How exactly did Ryan Gennett come to go by Scooter? "I gave it to myself when I was about 5," Gennett said of the nickname. When his mother would try to put his seatbelt on in the car, Gennett would click it off. She'd click it back in. He'd yank it right off. One day she got fed up. She took her son to the local police station to have officers teach him about...

Axford just misses on perfect Oscars night

A fair warning for those planning on having a prediction pool for next year's Academy Awards: Don't invite John Axford, because he'll win. An avid movie buff and a former film major at the University of Notre Dame, Axford has been making his predictions for the Oscars public since 2010 and was almost perfect Sunday night. The Milwaukee Brewers' closer went 14 of...

John Axford Owns the Academy Awards

Conventional wisdom would dictate that if you spend enough time on the road as a professional baseball player, you've seen more than your share of movies. And if you're Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford and you also happen to a self-proclaimed "Film Aficionado" (and film major in college)...you probably had an opinion on what was going to take home the top prize...

Depending on who you ask, Corey Hart will miss somewhere between one and two months this year after undergoing surgery on January 25 to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. Hart maintains he’ll be back by April 20. Manager Ron Roenicke insists the original late-May target is a more appropriate timetable. When we originally created these 2013 projections back in November/December...

As Black History Month Is Celebrated, Former Brewer Bernie Smith is Without a MLB Pension

(1970-71 Milwaukee Brewer Bernie Smith; Photo: Out Of The Park Baseball) (Editor's Note: This is a guest post by author Douglas J. Gladstone, who has written about the plight of financially marginalized ex-ballplayers in his book, A Bitter Cup of Coffee.)   As MLB prepares to usher in its new season on Sunday, March 31, our national pastime is an $8 billion industry...

Gallardo allows three runs on five hits

PHOENIX (AP) -- Yovani Gallardo is learning everything's different in a year the World Baseball Classic is being played. Gallardo allowed three runs on five hits over 2 2-3 innings in his first spring appearance and the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Seattle Mariners 6-5 on Tuesday. "Normally in spring training game you go out there and throw one inning," said Gallardo...

Segura wants to earn Brewers' confidence

By John Pesetski Special to FOXSportsWisconsin.com PHOENIX -- For the second time in four seasons, the Milwaukee Brewers are grooming a young shortstop long on talent but short on experience. In 2010, that player was Alcides Escobar. This year it's 22-year-old Jean Segura. Ironically, Escobar was traded to the Kansas City Royals in a deal for pitcher Zack Grienke, and Segura...

Scott Kazmir holds Milwaukee Brewers scoreless in first spring outing

Stops in Sugar Land Texas and Puerto culminated in a minor league deal with the resurgent Cleveland Indians.  It wasn’t long ago that Scott Kazmir was all but written off from the baseball world. Thankfully the first-year independent Sugar Land Skeeters thought enough to give him an opportunity when no one else would.  At 29 years old Kazmir still has lots of career left...
