When it was announced that Victor Martinez would miss the entire 2012 season with an ACL tear, we had just posted a player profile for our 147th-ranked player (Neftali Feliz). At that point we had two options: pick someone outside our top 200 to slide in at 146 and move everyone else up a spot or leave the rankings as we originally had them and proceed as normal when we got to Martinez. We elected to stay true to our rankings and do the latter. So, when Martinez isn’t injured, he’s probably the best catcher in fantasy. His power dipped last season, but he still drove in over 100 runs thanks to his sixth straight .300-plus seasons (if you take out his injury-shortened 2008). Like Billy Butler, Martinez seems to be an xBA outlier as he’s consistently outperformed what our formulas say he should hit, but players with almost zero speed tend to bat a little better than our equation expects them to.
