Found November 25, 2013 on Baseball Hot Corner:
Free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a four-year, $52M contract on Sunday. Peralta, 31, was seen as one of the offseason’s best options for teams looking for a durable, consistent offensive-minded shortstop, though he comes with the added baggage of the 50-game PED suspension he served in 2013. Peralta joins fellow offenders Marlon Byrd and Carlos Ruiz in the offseason steroid sweepstakes all cashing in on lucrative multi-year deals. That suspension, given to Peralta due to his connection to the Biogenesis scandal, inspired some of Peralta’s peers to react in rather candid fashion. Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler pulled no punches when he tweeted his reaction: It pays to cheat…Thanks, owners, for encouraging PED use “@JimBowdenESPNxm: Peralta – Cards agree to 4-year deal: http://t.co/rkpdAO3QaL” — Brad Ziegler (@BradZiegler) November 24, 2013   People really don’t understand how this works. We thought 50 games would be a deterrent. Obv...

The St. Louis Cardinals sign shortstop Jhonny Peralta

The St. Louis Cardinals continued their busy offseason by signing former Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta to a four-year deal worth $52 million.  The Cardinals were certainly in the market for a shortstop, but this signing seems desperate and also a deviation from the Cards’ general philosophy. The Cardinals, no doubt, had the financial means to sign a player for $52 million, but...

Cards close to signing shortstop Peralta

The Cardinals are close to finalizing a multiyear deal with free-agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta, several sources have confirmed Sunday morning. The club has not commented on the deal. It is team policy to wait until the player passes a physical to acknowledge the deal. The agreement with Peralta is pending the completion of a physical. Peralta, 31, would be a clear offensive upgrade...

Peralta lands in St. Louis

Free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed on a four-year contract, giving the All-Star a fresh start after his Biogenesis drug suspension last summer. The Cardinals filled a need by getting a top-hitting shortstop a month after losing the World Series in six games to Boston. Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso, while generally good fielders, are light...

AP source: SS Peralta, Cardinals reach 4-year deal

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed on a four-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because there was no official announcement. The two-time All-Star needed to pass a physical to complete the contract. Other media outlets had first reported...

Jhonny Peralta and the Price of Nerd Favorites

Over the weekend, the Cardinals signed Jhonny Peralta to a four year, $53 million contract. I think it’s fair to say that, heading into the off-season, he was expected to sign for much less. The Tigers didn’t bother making him a qualifying offer. He was coming off a 50 game suspension for using PEDs. Some teams that expressed interest in him saw him as an outfielder, not...

Cardinals agree with Jhonny Peralta for four years, $52 million

After many rumors and much speculation, the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed with free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta on a four-year contract worth $52 million. The news comes from Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com. ESPN MLB also announced the news early Sunday afternoon. Source: Cards to sign SS Peralta for $52M: Free agent Jhonny Peralta and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed o… http...

The pros, cons and questions surrounding the Peralta deal

Jhonny Peralta's game is a few notches down from Troy Tulowitzi and Elvis Andrus. He's not as athletic as J.J. Hardy or as well rounded as Asdrubal Cabrera. He's not equal to Stephen Drew defensively, either. But the 31-year-old, 11-year veteran is still plenty capable of making the Cardinals a better team. That's the key, right? Let's look at some reasons: Offensive...

Drugs have always been in baseball

Twitter was quite alive last night first with the news of Brian McCann signing with the Yankees and shortly after with the news that, apparently, Jhonny Peralta is set to sign a big deal with the Cardinals. The latter provided much more irony and angst since Peralta got caught up in the Biogenesis scandal and lost fifty games of his season in 2013. Despite paying his penalty, the...

Rosenthal: It pays to cheat, at least in Jhonny Peralta's case

The Jhonny Peralta contract will be a tipping point, leading to harsher penalties for players who are suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs.

Report: Cardinals Close to Signing Jhonny Peralta to 4-Year $52M Deal

Jhonny Peralta was suspended for 50 games last season because of his involvement with the Biogenesis scandal, but according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports that hasn’t stopped the St. Louis Cardinals from handing him a lucrative contract. Jhonny Peralta and the Cardinals are close on a four-year deal worth a little more than $52 million, source says. @FOXSports1 — Jon Morosi ...

Scott Raab on the Steelers, Jhonny Peralta, Chris Grant’s future and The Kings of Summer – WFNY Podcast – 2013-11-25

It was another awful week in Cleveland sports. It was so bad in fact that I don’t think Scott or I could even muster up any anger over it. When you get lulled out of anger and into straight depression, it doesn’t mean it’s any easier. It’s just sadder. Anyway, here’s the email I sent to Scott on Sunday night before we recorded on Monday morning… ———————...

Here’s Jhonny… Cardinals Agree To $52 Million Deal With Peralta

Jhonny Peralta and the Cardinals have reached agreement worth a little more than $52 million according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The deal was first reported by Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. So that’s that, and Peralta is off the table… This deal will certainly drive up the price for Stephen Drew and I’m sure Scott Boras is grinning from ear to ear right now… Peralta...

If Only The Mets Could Trade For Ben Zobrist

The Mets are looking for a shortstop.  The names that constantly pop up as potential free agent acquisitions at the position are Jhonny Peralta and Stephen Drew.  But Peralta is asking for a minimum of four years and $52 million and is supposedly getting attention from teams willing to give him that type of deal.  Stephen Drew could be had for less money and years, but he has...

Featured Post: Omar Infante Could Be A Smart Pickup For The Mets

Jhonny Peralta has signed a four-year, $52 million contract to play shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals.  Stephen Drew is still out there, but is surprisingly not getting much attention. (Injury history, anyone?)  Ben Zobrist could be traded for, but Tampa Bay really loves him and would more than likely ask for a king’s ransom in exchange for Zobrist. But there is one veteran...
