Poor Scott Podsednik Can't Hit His Way Onto Any Team; Red Sox Trade, Diamondbacks Release

All Scott Podsednik does is hit.  But no one wants him. You may remember him from Spring Training this year as he and Juan Pierre were battling for the 25th roster spot for an older, lefthanded leftfielder spot.   In Spring Training, Podsednik hit .309 and reached base at a .377 clip.  That sounds good enough to make a major league team, doesn't it? Nope.  Juan Pierre...

Upton brothers each hit 100th career HR

ST. PETERSBURG B.J. and Justin Upton have always had a friendly sibling rivalry since their childhood growing up in Chesapeake, Va. But neither of the former No. 1 major league draft picks could ever have imagined in their wildest dreams the way they would reach a career landmark Friday night separated by more than 1,000 miles but linked by an amazing twist of baseball fate. ...

Diamondbacks-Phillies Preview

While the NL West looked like a two-team race less than two weeks ago, the surging Arizona Diamondbacks have suddenly joined the party. The Diamondbacks try to continue their ascent up the standings Friday night in the opener of a three-game set in Philadelphia, where they've lost nine of 10 to the Phillies. Third-place Arizona (54-51) sat seven games out of first place on...

Goldschmidt celebrates anniversary in big way

LOS ANGELES In his 365 days in the major leagues, Paul Goldschmidt has hit 23 home runs, been a part of 89 victories, won an NL West pennant and started four playoff games, where he hit two more homers. He does belong. Goldschmidt celebrated the anniversary of his promotion Wednesday by making perhaps the base running play of the year and an enemy for a lot longer. Goldschmidt...

Upton brothers hit 100th home run on same night

B.J. Upton and his brother Justin hit their career 100th home run on Friday night, becoming the first siblings to reach the mark on the same night. Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton hit his 100th career home run Friday night in the second inning of their 4-2 win over the Phillies.  Later in the night his brother B.J. hit his 100th career home run as the Tampa Bay Rays...

Diamondbacks finally have turned up the heat

The defending NL West champion Diamondbacks have reentered the division race largely because of an offense that is suddenly as hot as the northern tip of the Sonoran desert ... and it was 101 in metro Phoenix at noon on Thursday. A three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers that concluded Wednesday brought the D-backs within 2 1/2 games of division-leading San Francisco before...

Video: Upton brothers each hit their 100th home run on same night

There have been several brothers that have made it to the Majors Leagues, but none have been linked as closely as BJ and Justin Upton. Both were top 2 picks in their respective drafts of 2002 and 2005 by the Tampa Bay Rays and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Earlier tonight, they became the 6th pair of [...]

Corbin helps D-backs sweep Dodgers

Patrick Corbin pitched two-hit ball over six innings following his promotion from the minors Wednesday, and the Arizona Diamondbacks got home runs from Miguel Montero and newcomer Chris Johnson in a 4-0 victory that completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Montero opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single against rookie Stephen Fife and made it 4...

Jerry Hairston’s backwards throw from the outfield

You know what they say, professional sports is all about the fans (whomever they really is).  Dodgers utilityman Jerry Hairston, Jr. gave back to a lucky fan Tuesday night during the Diamondbacks-Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium.  D’Backs outfielder Chris Young hit a rocket down the left field line.  In an effort to cut down Young at second base, Hairtson hustled over toward the...

Upton brothers each hit 100th HR

Brothers Justin Upton and B.J. Upton both hit career homer No. 100 on Friday night, just about an hour apart and in different leagues. Justin Upton connected for Arizona in the second inning at Philadelphia off Kyle Kendrick. Then it was older brother's turn. B.J. Upton went deep in the fourth inning for Tampa Bay against Baltimore's Tommy Hunter. B.J. Upton joins Rickey...

Goldschmidt Cheap-Shots Hairston

Jerry Hairston, Jr. wants Paul Goldschmidt suspended for his dirty slide on Wednesday afternoon. I agree with Hairston. Too many players are getting injured thanks to unsportsmanlike, unnecessary, and ILLEGAL slides…. Buster Posey, Daniel Murphy, Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Mark Ellis, the list goes on and on…. For all of the brainless, wanna-be tough guy clowns out there who say, ...

Scott Podsednik Wants to be in the Majors, Won't Return to Red Sox Following Craig Breslow Trade

BOSTON -- After showing signs of life against the Yankees and the Tigers, the Red Sox are slumping once again. The team's longest winning streak this season is six games, a mark they established back in April. With two-thirds of the season over, the Red Sox are still seesawing over and under the .500 record plateau. As the Red Sox continue clawing their way through the troubles...
