The New York Mets were finally defeated by the Atlanta Braves tonight at Turner Field 9-3 behind Johan Santana's shortest outing of his career in which he allowed 5 runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Johan Santana (1-1, 3.97 ERA) struggled from the outset as Jason Bay dropped a fly ball that eventually allowed Michael Bourn to score in the opening frame. The Braves didn't look back from there, tacking on 5 runs in the bottom of the 2nd en route to securing their 6th win of the season. For Santana, it was the shortest start of his career and a step back from the great work that he had been producing this season. It's to be expected that he would have a few bumps in the road, and the biggest factor will be seeing if he can bounce back and remain effective. Ramon Ramirez continued to struggle, allowing 2 earned runs in his 2 innings of work to bump his ERA to 7.11 on the year.

Randall Delgado did a nice job for the Braves in shutting down the Mets, backing them off the plate and utilizing his change-up and slider to Bay, Davis and Duda effectively enough that all 3 were only to collect one hit--a Bay double that should have been a routine pop-up that Dan Uggla lost in the lights.

David Wright was able to extend his streak of reaching base at least twice with 2 more hits tonight. Daniel Murphy added a few hits but the Mets were ultimately unable to get anything going.

The Mets will look to take the series in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon in Atlanta as R.A Dickey will look to pick up his 3rd win of the season at 12:00 PM ET.
