The New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-5 tonight behind strong offensive showings from Lucas Duda, Daniel Murphy, Ruben Tejada and a strong start from birthday boy Dillon Gee.

The Mets hopped on the board in the top of the 1st frame after Lucas Duda scorched his 4th home run of the year, a 2-run shot, that drove in David Wright to bring the Mets up 2-0. Duda would contribute a 2-RBI single later in the game to break a 4-4 tie. David Wright looked to take a step back in the right direction tonight, collecting 3 hits including a 2-RBI double that wound up proving to be the difference in the contest. While the pitching remained shaky, the Mets offense was able to pick up the birthday boy to pick up their 4th win in 5 games.

Dillon Gee (2-2, 4.85 ERA) pitched 7 innings allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, while throwing a career high 117 pitches. Gee started the game looking like he was going to have a rough night after he allowed a run in the 1st but managed to rebound before allowing the Rockies to put up 3 in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Gee did well mixing his pitches and collected 7 strikeouts during his gutsy performance, one that was able to give the bullpen a much needed rest after last night's rout.

Frank Francisco collected his 5th save of the year but struggled during his inning of work. After retiring the first 2 men to face him, Francisco allowed a solo home run to Dexter Fowler before Tyler Colvin lined a triple to left-center field. This allowed Jason Giambi to step into the box as the tying run, and Giambi hit a scorcher to left-center that was impressively run down by Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

The Mets will look to pick up their second consecutive series victory tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 PM ET as Johan Santana will take the bump for the first time this year on normal rest.

Boiling Points:

  • Ike Davis showed encouraging signs that he may be getting ready to break out of his early season slump, reaching base twice on a walk and a base hit. Davis also connected for a loud out that reached the warning track but was run down nicely by Dexter Fowler.
  • Ruben Tejada entered the series 6-36 but has since gone 7-10 in the series thus far, raising his average to .295.
  • The middle of the order (Tejada, Murphy, Wright and Duda) combined for 11 of the team's 13 hits.
  • Tim Byrdak set-up Francisco by pitching a perfect 8th inning.
