The New York Mets picked up David Wright’s $16 million club option for the 2013 season but it begs the question: why not sign him to a long term extension? It’s fairly clear that Wright is the best batter in the lineup and the most important player on the team. He’s a foundational piece that the Mets can build around. However, the detractors suggest that the Mets simply aren’t ready to compete. They aren’t one or two pieces away and therefore spending roughly $20 million on Wright, which is likely what he’d command in an extension, doesn’t make sense since the team has so many other holes. If that’s the case, why not trade him? People making their MLB picks have already linked Wright to the Boston Red Sox as they need a big name player in their lineup. He would be a perfect fit for Fenway Park and could help steady the locker room, which is in need of leadership. The Red Sox have the prospects like Will Middlebrooks to send back.
