Matt Hague Outrighted to Indianapolis

The Pittsburgh Pirates have outrighted first baseman Matt Hague to Indianapolis, according to the MLB.com transactions page. It appears the move happened at the end of last week, although I don’t believe it was announced and this is the first I’ve noticed it. Hague was designated for assignment last week when the Pirates acquired Zach Stewart, Vin Mazzaro, and Clint Robinson...

Winter Leagues Recap: Two Hits for Marte, Garcia’s Debut

In a light day of Winter League action yesterday, Starling Marte went 2-for-4, with two singles and a run scored.  He now has a .320/.394/.485 line in 25 games. Marte started the season off showing improved plate patience, but has hit a wall the last eight games. After having 11 walks through just 17 games, Marte has failed to draw a walk in his last eight games, striking out six...

Clint Hurdle on Stolen Bases, Leadoff Hitters, Pitching, and More

Clint Hurdle met with the media today at the MLB Winter Meetings. The transcript of the interview was sent out via press release. Below are some highlights. On who could lead off for the Pirates… “I’m not even going to go there right now because that’ll get printed with here’s who we’re leading off.  I don’t know right now.  I’ve got some thoughts.  I’ve got...

2012 Rule 5 Draft Results: Pirates Pass; Pick One and Lose One in Triple-A Phase

The Pittsburgh Pirates opted to pass in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft today, which is the first time they’ve passed on a pick under Neal Huntington. They also didn’t lose a player in the draft. The Pirates can still pick in the minor league portion, which is coming up shortly. UPDATE 10:28 AM: The Pirates took RHP Ethan Hollingsworth from the Kansas City Royals...

Pirates Acquire Andy Oliver for Ramon Cabrera

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired left-handed pitcher Andy Oliver from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for catcher Ramon Cabrera. More details to come.

The 2012 Rule 5 Draft is Tomorrow

The MLB Rule 5 draft is tomorrow morning at 10 AM EST. The Pittsburgh Pirates have an open spot on their 40-man roster, which means they could make a pick. Whether they actually make a pick is another issue. The Pirates have made a pick in every draft overseen by Neal Huntington. They took Evan Meek in the 2007 Rule 5 draft. Donald Veal went in 2008, followed by John Raynor in 2009...

Tigers send pitcher Andy Oliver to Pirates for minor league catcher Ramon Cabrera

As the Winter Meetings came to close the Tigers made a relatively low-key move Wednesday night sending LHP Andy Oliver (a once coveted pitching prospect) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league catcher Ramon Cabrera. The 23-year-old switching hitting Cabrera batted .276 in 2012, with three home runs, 50 RBIs, and 22 doubles in 112 games and offers some catching depth after losing...

Pirates Neil Walker to be Ready For Camp

MLB.com reports that Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Neil Walker, whose season ended early due to a herniated disk in his lower back, should be ready in time for spring training 2013. Wednesday's update discloses that Walker, a Pittsburgh native, has begun participating in strength and conditioning programs. The 11th player chosen in the 2004 amateur draft, Walker took...

Pirates Interested in Manny Parra

We’ve already heard that the Pirates are interested in left-handed pitcher Manny Parra, among other recently non-tendered pitchers. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had an update on Twitter, pointing out that the Pirates and the Mets were both interested in Parra. As I noted last night, Parra would be an interesting option for the bullpen, but his lack of control...

Winter Leagues Recap: Johnson Throws Three Hitless Innings

In Winter League action from last night, Starling Marte went 1-for-4, with his fourth triple of the DWL season. He also reached on an error in the second, but was thrown out stealing for his first caught stealing in nine attempts. Marte has tripled in three of the last six games. Anderson Hernandez went 1-for-3, with a walk and his first home run of the DWL season. He now has a ...

First Pitch: Evaluating the Non-Tendered Starting Pitchers

The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking for pitching this off-season, and several pitchers just hit the open market as non-tenders. Rob Biertempfel and Tom Singer both reported today that the Pirates have shown interest in several of the non-tendered pitchers, specifically looking at left-handers John Lannan, Tom Gorzelanny, Manny Parra, and right-handers Jair Jurrjens and Mike Pelfrey...

Roster Watch: Jason Grilli

What a coincidence.  Today is the day that Jason Grilli will apparently choose what team he is going to play for and it’s also his turn in the Roster Watch series. Grilli has been a machine for the Pirates.  He has been a consistent strikeout machine and has had the two best seasons of his [...]

The Detroit Tigers have traded starting pitcher Andy Oliver to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for switch-hitting catcher prospect Ramon Cabrera. Continue reading →

Winter Meetings Notes, Day 3

A few notes from the final group of manager media sessions Wednesday... Pirates second baseman Neil Walker has started his strength and conditioning program two weeks ago, and has completed all of his therapy after his season ended with a herniated disc in his back. Manager Clint Hurdle said he's "ready to go." When asked about facing the prospect of a bullpen...

Winter Meetings Day 2: All's pretty much quiet

With one day of the winter meetings behind us, there wasn't much action on the Pittsburgh Pirate front. In a press conference at the end of the day, Neal Huntington admitted that Joel Hanrahan's probably not as valuable on the trade market now as he was six months ago (this is kind of common sense, of course, though it's not like they could've done anything given...
