Shelby Miller has baffled numerous opponents this year, but none more so than the Milwaukee Brewers. He'll aim for his third straight win over Milwaukee on Monday night as the St. Louis Cardinals continue their NL Central road trip. The Cardinals (71-52), one game back of Pittsburgh for first place, have had their way with the Brewers this year, winning all four meetings in Milwaukee and eight of 10 overall. Miller (11-8, 2.97 ERA) dominated them twice, striking out eight over seven innings of a 2-0 home win on April 12, then limiting them to one run over six innings in a 6-1 road victory on May 3.Miller's 0.69 ERA versus Milwaukee is his lowest against any opponent the rookie has faced more than once this season. Jean Segura, Carlos Gomez and Jonathan Lucroy are a combined 1 for 16 with seven strikeouts, though Gomez hasn't played since Thursday due to a sprained right knee and is considered day-to-day.Miller, however, has been mediocre of late, allowing 11 runs in his last 16 23 innings over four starts. He gave up two solo homers and five runs in six innings of a 5-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, one week after throwing two pitches in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers after taking a leadoff line drive on the elbow."Health-wise, he felt fine," manager Mike Matheny said. "He got a couple pitches more in the middle of the plate than he wanted to early. I think stuff-wise, it looked normal."Conversely, Milwaukee starter Marco Estrada (5-4, 4.71) has struggled mightily versus St. Louis, going 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in three outings this year, including his worst performance of the season. He gave up a career-high eight runs and six hits over a season-low 3 13 innings in a 10-1 home loss on May 5 and is 0-4 with a 6.55 ERA in 10 career games against the Cardinals.Estrada has been solid since returning from a strained left hamstring, though, yielding one run over 11 innings in two starts."Overall, I can't complain about this," Estrada told the team's official website after limiting the Rangers to a solo homer and three other hits over six innings of a 5-1 victory on Tuesday. "I kept the team in the game and we pulled it off. It's a confidence booster."Yadier Molina is 9 for 18 versus Estrada and 4 for 9 over his last two games after going hitless in five at-bats against Pittsburgh on Thursday - his first contest since missing two weeks with a sprained right knee.Matt Carpenter drove in a pair of runs in a 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and is hitting .377 over his last 14 games.Milwaukee (54-70) had enjoyed a five-game run of strong pitching from Aug.10-15, with starters throwing at least six innings and allowing two or fewer runs in each outing. The Brewers won despite a five-run, 4 2-3 inning performance from Tom Gorzelanny in a 7-6 win over Cincinnati on Friday, but couldn't overcome the seven runs surrendered by Wily Peralta over 4 1-3 innings in a 9-1 defeat on Sunday.Norichika Aoki is just 5 for 24 over his last six games but is one of the few Brewers to experience success against Miller, going 3 for 6.

David Freese could be right-handed version of Matt Adams for St. Louis Cardinals

The moments of brilliance for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese come in flashes. He hit one of the most memorable home runs in franchise history in the 11th inning of Game 6 of the 2011 World Series against the Texas Rangers and just Monday he delivered a vital pinch-hit, two-run double to extend the Cardinals lead to 8-5 in the eighth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers...

Jay Reignites Cardinals While Quieting Critics

It was not too long ago that the mere mention of Jon Jay’s name sparked a conversation about every way that he could be replaced. But within the last few weeks, nobody has been more responsible for the turnaround of the Cardinals than him. And now, with the Cardinals back to a comfortable 20 games over .500 and firmly on the heels of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jay continues to be...

Why Kolten Wong should continue to get more playing time than David Freese

The St. Louis Cardinals came away from Chicago with two victories in three games over the Chicago Cubs as the team now moves on to Milwaukee and another winnable series. The Chicago series marked the debut of second baseman Kolten Wong, who finished without a hit in two starts. But despite the lack of success at the plate in his debut, Wong should still get a bulk of the playing...

stlcupofjoe.com: Joe Kelly should not be overlooked for 2014 rotation

Joe Kelly has been the best starting pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals since the All-Star break. Including a brief stint back in the bullpen, Kelly has been one of the top pitchers in baseball since mid-June. The table below is a breakdown of his statistics since June 14th: Date G ▴ GS Dec IP ER BB SO HR ERA BA Jun 14 to Aug 17 12 7 4-0 53...

stlcupofjoe.com: What has been different for Jon Jay?

At the start of August, Jon Jay‘s batting average was .253. Now, 18 games into August, it is up to .273, and he appears to be climbing towards that coveted .300 mark. Needless to say, Jay has been one of the hottest, most consistent hitters for the Cardinals of late. Jay has the most hits (27) and most RBI (17) in the National League for the month of August. He is second in doubles...

Kelly, Molina spark Cards to 4-0 win over Cubs

The Cardinals have won eight games (out of 23) since July 25. Joe Kelly has won three and started another Cardinals victory in that streak. Yadier Molina has caught two games since coming of the disabled after suffering a right knee sprain. The Cardinals have won both. You may draw your own conclusions. Kelly who has given up one or no runs in three of those four starts blanked...

Marco Estrada hoping fourth time is the charm versus Cards

Shelby Miller has baffled numerous opponents this year, but none more so than the Milwaukee Brewers. He'll aim for his third straight win over Milwaukee on Monday night as the St. Louis Cardinals continue their NL Central road trip. Have You Looked At This?

Candidly, this isn't a small feat for this Cardinals team.  There was a point a couple weeks back where the slide to 10 games over .500 was more of a realistic reality than 20+. But thanks to a realization that comebacks past the 6th inning are legally allowed and the extended break between Jake Westbrook starts... here we are again. But in case you weren't paying...

Preview: Cards look to keep the good times rolling at Miller Park

Beginning on Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals will play a potentially season-defining stretch of 17 games in 18 days against other NL playoff contenders. For now, they'll happily welcome a few more against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals look to continue their dominance of the NL Central's cellar dwellers with a sixth straight victory at Miller Park on Tuesday night...

The Cardinals Rollercoaster Season

The Cardinals are neck and neck with the Pirates and Reds. I pretty much could have called it that the Reds are there, but not so much the Pirates. They may fall off still, but they look pretty damn good as a team. They are perhaps the most well-rounded team in the NL Central, which has proved to be a tough division. Well-rounded doesn’t mean best though. While Fangraphs does...

Cardinals 4, Cubs 0

Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer, Joe Kelly threw six scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0 on Saturday. Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was pulled shortly after making a mental mistake that let the Cardinals score in the fifth. The Cardinals led 1-0 and had the bases loaded with one out when Castro caught a popup by Matt Carpenter in short left...

It was a 2-5 night for the Baby Birds as State College and Johnson City won, while Memphis, Springfield, Palm Beach, Peoria, and the GCL Cards all lost. Young pitching prospects Alex Reyes (pictured) and Rob Kaminsky were solid in their starts. Here are quick game summaries followed by the official box score: Memphis lost to Omaha 5-4 on Saturday. Jermaine Curtis has two of the...

Wainwright wins 1st game in nearly a month, 6-1 over Cubs

Cardinals righthander Adam Wainwright hadn’t won a game for nearly a month. But he still is tied for the National League in wins at 14 after a dominant seven-inning 11-strikeout performance against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Wainwright winless in four starts since July 21 was the staff ace he had been for much of the season raising his record to 14-7 and his mark at Wrigley Field...
