David Phelps (5-4, 4.01 ERA) is kicking off the Orioles series tonight against T.J. McFarland (1-0, 4.14 ERA). Phelps is facing the Orioles for the second time this year, first as a starter. He pitched four innings of scoreless one hit relief against them on April 13. He is 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA in four starts this month. Since joining the rotation, the 26 year old right hander is 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA and The Yankees are 7-3 in his 10 starts.
McFarland is a Rule 5 Draft pick from 2012, and the 24 year old is making his first Major League start. He has pitched to a 4.14 ERA in 18 relief outings. His longest outing of the season came on Sunday against the Blue Jays, he came into the game in the third inning and allowed five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.
The Yankees’ shorthanded lineup and lack of production has put a lot of pressure on the pitchers to perform. Phil Hughes stepped up on Thursday, pitching an eight inning effort in which he allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking one, but the offense was stagnate getting zero runs.
Zoilo Almonte went hitless in 10 at bats during the series against Texas. However, he still holds a .318 batting average (7-22), a .400 on-base percentage with a .545 slugging percentage through the first eight games of his Majors career. Girardi has no plans to sit the rookie, “we’re running Z out there,” he said. “He’s played pretty well; we’ll continue to do that. We’ll continue to watch what he’s doing. But he’s played very well.”

The Yankees are in need of a third baseman since Alex Rodriguez is hurt and facing a possible suspension. While the Yankees have faced injuries to Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Derek Jeter, they still have found a way to remain in contention. To be honest, I can't believe it and neither can many reporters throughout the league.

Alex Rodriguez says he feels great and his relationship with the New York Yankees is fine.
Rodriguez didn't indicate when he will start a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment or rejoin the big league team, saying Saturday he "can't wait to get back."
"So far, no issues," Rodriguez said. "I'm just working really hard. I'm having...
What the F is up with Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees?
And does anyone outside of the Bronx care?
While Bob Kaplisch of the Record (Woodland Park, NJ) recently wrote that a Yankees insider called Rodriguez's recent behavior "bizarre," A-Rod told the Associated Press on Saturday that he "can't wait to get back."
"So far, no issues,"...
And so the war continues…
The New York Daily News has reported a bombshell revelation in the ongoing Arod vs the Yankees saga. A source close to the situation had let it be known that Arod and his group of advisers are so worried that MLB will hand down a lengthy suspension on Arod for his Biogenesis ties that they have sped up the timetable for his return from injury.

Alex Rodriguez is champing at the bit to get back on the baseball field, but the Yankees might be pulling the reins on the 14-time All-Star.
Rodriguez believes the Yankees are purposely slowing his return to their active roster in attempt to declare him medically unable to play for the 2013 season. That would allow them to regain $22.4 million of his $28 million salary through insurance...
When New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera finally hangs up his cleats following this season, it's possible he might have another job already lined up.
For absolutely no reason, the Harlem Globetrotters "drafted" the all-time saves leader on Tuesday.

Gone For YearIt's too bad we don't have the capacity to feel sorry for The Evil Ones—because this would be a great time for empathy. First, their GM is engaged in an expletive-deleted TWITTER war with their re-habbing third baseman (Alex Rodriguez) and now their high-priced first baseman (Mark Teixeira) is out for the rest of 2013. Teixeira confirmed that he will be undergoing...
The rubber match falls on Phil Hughes (3-6, 5.09 ERA) in the afternoon game against Derek Holland (5-4, 3.43 ERA) and the Rangers. Hughes is on extended rest, coming off seven days since his previous start, against the Dodgers. He struggled in that outing, allowing five runs on 10 hits over six innings in the 6-0 loss. In four career appearances (three starts) against Texas, Hughes...
Remember back when Brian Cashman was a nebbishy, likeable dude who didn't run around acting like his you-know-what didn't stink? Anytime the New York Yankees make the short trip down I-95 to visit Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles, it usually means an intense and important series is about to begin.
This weekend will be no different.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman's directive the other day was calibrated for maximum effect, sure. He knew exactly what he was doing. It's why he tucked a profanity in the middle.
