I'm not ready to declare Detroit the 2012 World Series Champions. Last week I was very concerned about a lack of protection for Miguel Cabrera in the Tigers lineup. I believed that the loss of Victor Martinez was a huge loss from the middle of the batting order. Martinez drove in over 100 runs and hit well the entire season. He was probably the only other hitter in the Tigers lineup to be trusted game in and game out. Yes, Brennan Boesch had a nice first half. So did Alex Avila. Both declined along with Jhonny Peralta after the All Star Break. Martinez and Cabrera remained very steady. Does it help to have the power hitting Fielder in the Tigers lineup? You bet. The Tigers just got better. They will probably run away with the American League Central. But home runs for Prince? Not so fast. Comerica is a tough place on a left-handed hitter. Comerica may be among the worst landing places for Fielder. He would have had a much better shot at putting up huge numbers...

Joe Sheehan: Moving Cabrera to third base is a noble, but futile, experiment

It's good that everyone involved is on board with moving Miguel Cabrera to third base to make room for Prince Fielder but that doesn't mean it's a good idea, writes Joe Sheehan.

Where Should The Detroit Tigers Play Miguel Cabrera?

After the shock of the Prince Fielder signing wore off, the biggest question for the Detroit Tigers was how Jim Leyland would manage to give all of his players enough at bats over the next few seasons. The concerns were focused on Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. And rightfully so, given that when healthy those are the Tigers top 3 hitters. Now that we know that...

Three Designated Hitters: A Tigers’ Roster Crunch

The Tigers made a big splash by signing Prince Fielder to a long-term deal. Fielder’s bat has always been a boon, and the lineup will appreciate his help. It’s the other side of the game that will take a hit with the addition — Fielder is not known for his glove, and neither is incumbent Miguel Cabrera. How will the roster settle this season? And what will it look like...

Fantasy Impact: Fielder Follows Daddy to Detroit

In the wake of Victor Martinez‘s season ending knee injury, the Detroit Tigers have swiped up the last remaining big time player on free agency, Prince Fielder. You may recall that Prince’s daddy, Cecil, was a Tigers star, hitting 51 homers back in 1990. All told he spent six-plus seasons as a low average, high power first baseman and designated hitter, driving in 100...

Prospectus Hit and Run: The Heavyweight Infield by Jay Jaffe

It's no hyperbole to say Prince Fielder's nine-year, $214 million deal with the Tigers shocked the baseball world. The Tigers certainly weren’t on the list of likely suitors given their sizable commitment to the sizable player occupying his position: Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera was the AL's most valuable first baseman in 2010 and 2011 according to WARP, and is under...

Tigers' Infield Defense Could Be Brutal

Miguel Cabrera is set to slide over to third base for the Tigers to make room for Prince Fielder. The pair of poor defenders could be a liability while in the field.

Who needs a Prince When You have a King

I haven't weighed in on the whole Prince Saga yet. Here we go. ............ Still waiting? --------- That's about all I have to say. Fielder and the Tigers agreed Tuesday to a nine-year, $214 million contract With Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera in the middle of the lineup, the Detroit Tigers look ready for a season of slugging at Comerica Park. With Cabrera and...

The Prince And The Paupers

With the signing of Prince Fielder on Tuesday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers have quickly become once again the favorites in the American League Central.  After losing top of the line player Victor Martinez  to injury, the Tigers solidified their lineup by bringing in their new masher. This sets up a problem for both Kansas City Royals of present and of future. The Royals will...

Leyland tasked with deciding who bats cleanup

The Tigers have their protection for Miguel Cabrera in the batting order with Prince Fielder. Could they also have their new cleanup hitter?

TFD: Prince Fielder at first base, Miguel Cabrera at third base. What could go wrong?

Good times.

Johnny Damon would join select company in second tour of duty with Tigers

If the Tigers sign Johnny Damon to take Victor Martinez's place, he would join a distinguished group of players who have had a second tour with the Tigers. Damon played with the Tigers in 2010, then joined Tampa Bay as a free agent last season. In chronological order, here are some prominent "two-time" Tigers from recent decades:

Tigers swoop in to claim their prize

So it turns out the Tigers were the "mystery team" in the Prince Fielder sweepstakes. And it's no mystery why they went all-in on Cecil's son. As replacements for an injured Victor Martinez go, this one's tough to top.
