Fielder's found his footing a bit after an early retirement. Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Plenty of celebrity athletes and actors become gourmets and gourmands. The riches and travel afforded by big contracts expose the stars to food and drink around the world.

Heck, even the moody-and-reclusive Maynard James Keenan of Tool spent nearly an hour discussing wine grapes with Joe Rogan on a podcast once. It happens.

But it’s a far bigger challenge to become a respected celebrity food connoisseur and a cinema-verite star at the same time. Especially when your forte is crushing a ball with a bat…and not caring if it lands on somebody’s steak sandwich.

Leave it to Prince Fielder. The retired MLB slugger has launched a new career of wining, dining and making merry in front of an online-streaming audience. The show, Fielder’s Choice, is a montage of footage from restaurants in New York, Las Vegas and Florida in which Fielder and his wife, Chanel, indulge and chat with guest stars (mostly retired baseball players and other athletes put out to pasture).

Reviews of the show appear to be mixed. Sports fans like the interviews, but the budget and production values are a little sketchy.

Brian Reinhart of The Hardball Times excoriates the look and feel of Fielder’s Choice, but still has a soft spot for the conversation between Hall of Famers:

“There’s an unfortunate yellow tint to most of the kitchen photography…Music floats in and out of scenes without obvious logic. Guests are occasionally difficult to hear. Luckily, the greatest strength of Fielder’s Choice is Prince himself, a charmer and a quick wit who consistently draws interesting answers out of his guests.”

In fact, the food reviews seem like the least-interesting part of Fielder’s Choice. The former Texas Ranger is ranked No. 15 on our Texas Rangers Top 40, and is clearly comfortable interacting with fans on social media.

Fielder might be better-served interviewing fellow legends in a variety of settings, leaving the snooty analyses of exotic ice cream to Anthony Bourdain.
