It appears it's not a question of if Jurickson Profar gets called up this season, but when.

Both Texas Rangers club president Nolan Ryan and general manager Jon Daniels said the possibility exists that the 19-year-old shortstop, who is currently considered the second-best prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America, will be called up before Sept. 1.

"It's a consideration," Daniels said Monday. "He's one of the candidates we'll discuss."

The discussion is likely to take place this week. The Rangers are currently operating with a short three-man bench because infielder Alberto Gonzalez was outrighted to the minors last week. The Rangers opted to keep eight relievers for a time as they try to navigate through a 10-day stretch in which they are facing Detroit, the New York Yankees and Toronto.

Barring an August trade/waiver claim, the Rangers don't have a strong candidate to be the backup middle infielder on the 40-man roster. The Rangers believe Profar, who is hitting .285 for Class AA Frisco, is as advanced as any player in the system -- and with significantly higher upside.

While Washington was hesitant to go to Gonzalez, Profar could give him a chance to rest Elvis Andrus once or twice on the upcoming 10-game homestand. It would also allow Profar to get acclimated to the majors, thus serving dual purposes. If the Rangers don't go to Profar and don't acquire outside help, the most likely call-up might be Gonzalez, who cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Class AAA Round Rock.

Andrus went 2-for-4 Monday in the Rangers' 8-2 loss to the Yankees.
