As things stand now, the 2012 Boston Red Sox appear to planning on using three platoons to help improve both offensive and defensive production in 2012. In Right field, where the Sox struggled to find production in 2011, the team has added LHH Ryan Sweeney and RHH Cody Ross to the picture, and fifth outfielder and RHH Darnell McDonald and prospect LHH Ryan Kalish could also factor in. The team employed a semi-platoon at catcher last season with good success and they will go even further toward a full platoon this season with Kelly Shoppach replacing Jason Varitek as Jarrod Saltalamacchia battery mate. Finally, with the trade of Marco Scutaro, it appears that shortstop will also see a time share. RHH Mike Aviles will see time there along with switch hitter Nick Punto.
