Opening day has arrived. On the bright side things are starting to look a little better for the Giants after taking 2 out of 3 from the Rockies. Madison Bumgarner pitched an excellent game, Barry Zito threw a shutout and the Giants offense continued to score runs in bunches. There were some not so good things but now isn't the time to rehash those because opening day is for celebrating. The Giants draw the struggling Pirates who come in with the lowest runs scored of any team in baseball and like the Giants they have only 2 wins in the young season. My Projection model really likes the Giants chances this series so hopefully the Giants can send people home happy with another series win. Probable Pitchers: Matt Cain vs. James McDonald Barry Zito vs. Charlie Morton (Morton hasn't been officially announced yet but is the likely choice) Ryan Vogelsong vs. Kevin Correia Odds: Giants Pirates Total Runs Gam...

Barry Zito Solid, Giants Improve to .500

When Barry Zito loaded the bases in the first inning, then subsequently allowed a two-run single to Neil Walker, it was looking like Monday’s Zito was all but history. But he settled down with a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, and was ultimately great the rest of the way. There were some hiccups on defense — including a couple errors at the hands of Pablo Sandoval — but Zito ended...

Madison Bumgarner Dazzles, Giants Win 4-2

And that’s the formula. It took the Giants several games to master it, but there it is, finally: a strong outing from the starter, shutdown relief*, and just enough run support. It’s rather surprising, but six games into the season, this was only the Giants’ second quality start. In fact, this was only their second decent start. Four of the previous five starts — the one...

Postgame Wrap: Barry Zito, Fourth Starter

I think it’s pretty obvious what the main story is coming out of today’s game. If Ryan Theriot can continue slapping singles in key spots Barry Zito pitched a good game, which is not something that you would expect if you’ve seen Barry Zito pitch in the last six years. He got a little roughed up in the first, but settled down and controlled the game, pitching through errors...

Giants 4, Rockies 2

No win for the ages. Or, for that matter, the aged. Madison Bumgarner scattered four hits over 7 1-3 innings and took a no-hit bid into the sixth Thursday in the San Francisco Giants' 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. At 49, Moyer failed in his second attempt to become the oldest pitcher to win a major league game. Moyer (0-2) surrendered four runs, two of them earned, and...

SF Giants Rumors: Scoring Isn’t A Problem, Young vs. Old, Today’s Lineup

It’s no secret that the San Francisco Giants pitching is no where close to where it should be. All I can say is these guys are way to good, so they will get this turned around soon.   The offense is what really has a lot of Giants fans excited right now. We know the pitchers are going to get back in their groove, and the wins will start to pile up with the way the G-Men are putting...

Game 8: Giants 4 Pirates 3

The Pirates started Saturday's game out with two runs in the first inning off of Barry Zito thanks to a bases-loaded single by Neil Walker, but it was pretty much all downhill from there. The end of the game was hugely frustrating, of course, but let's hit a few waypoints before we get there. Charlie Morton did alright against a Giants' lineup that literally featured...

Oh, Those Giants.

Finally, the Giants team we all came to know and have heart attacks over decided to show up, making the universe feel just a little more in balance.  Barry Zito is still technically our best pitcher, but Madison Bumgarner looks like he’s ready to give him a run for his massive stockpiles of money in throwing a no-hitter through 5+ innings the day after the Giants surrendered two...

Barry Zito's first start fantasy shocker

While wondering what is wrong with Tim Lincecum (12.91 ERA through two starts), here are 10 other things on my mind after the season's first week ... Are Sergio Santos' days as closer numbered? Perhaps he's been distracted due to the birth of his child this week, but Santos is off to a rough start. Through three appearances, he's blown a pair of saves while posting...

Giants Beat Pirates As the Voodoo Continues

This game had a little bit of everything.  First we had the news of Brian Wilson and his elbow troubles.  This was followed by the usual raging about Brandon Belt being out of the lineup once again.  Then we had Barry Zito continuing to pitch well, albeit against an anemic Pirates offense.  Finally there was great defense followed by horrible defense followed by great defense...

So far, so weird...

I believe by definition, that the first 7 games of this season have been a mixed bag. We've been swept, we've been embarrassed, we've been disappointing. But simultaneously, we've been exciting, we've been heroic, and we've been promising.Only with the Giants could such contrasts hold so much value at the same time.I mean, we've got Tim Lincecum on one...

Garza, Bumgarner wow fantasy owners

On Thursday, I attended the first half of a back-to-back crosstown doubleheader. I joined the masses for Thursday's "getaway day" special between the Cubs and Brewers at Wrigley Field. With free neighborhood parking and a friendly secondary ticket market at play (one popular site had tickets available for 19 cents plus fees), I entered the stadium for less than the...

A win is a win

[caption id="attachment_73" align="alignnone" width="233" caption="Giants win on walk off error 4-3"][/caption] So tonight was one of the rare nights where I couldn't watch the game. But I was checking my phone for updates all night. I can't really give my analysis or comments on the game, but I did just watch the highlights. All I...
