The Dominating Pirates and Whether It Can Last

A month ago, I wrote that it was time to take the Pirates seriously, as their 33-20 record was a strong enough start to put them squarely in the playoff mix, even if we didn’t think they were going to keep playing like a .622 team going forward. Well, since that post was published, the Pirates have gone 18-10, which translates into a .642 winning percentage. Rather than beginning...

Brewers turn to Kyle Lohse to prevent sweep in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates are playing so well that they have to feel they can earn a rare win over Kyle Lohse. Lohse is 9-2 in his career against the Pirates, who will try for their ninth straight victory Sunday and a three-game home sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers. Pittsburgh (50-30) owns baseball's best record thanks to its longest win streak since a 10-game run June 26-July...

Game 81: Pirates 2 Brewers 1

This is how the first half of the season comes to a close: with a 2 1/2 hour rain delay that puts Charlie Morton on the shelf after just two innings and 22 pitches. With five perfect Vin Mazzaro innings in relief of Morton. With Justin Wilson, Bryan Morris, Jason Grilli, and Mark Melancon all following Mazzaro's masterful work with scoreless innings of their own. With Tony Watson...

The second half begins

The second half of the season begins tonight, with the Pirates defending the best record in baseball and sending Brandon Cumpton to the mound. That's one crazy sentence. Because of the Pirates' 14-inning game against the Brewers necessitated him to warm up, Jeff Locke's start is being pushed back a bit. Because Sunday was Jeanmar Gomez's day to throw a bullpen session...

Pirates 2, Brewers 1

The Pirates finished an incredible first half of the season with yet another incredible game on Sunday, as the bullpen’s heroic effort and two clutch hits delivered a 14-inning win over the Brewers. The Pirates have now won nine in a row. They swept the Brewers. They extended their lead in the NL Central to two games. They are still the best team in baseball. They have 51 wins...

West Virginia Scores Three In Ninth To Win Series Finale 5-4 Over Lakewood

The West Virginia Power took the four series in Lakewood today, with a comeback win, giving them three wins against the BlueClaws in this set and they have now beat them in 13 of 16 meetings this year. Down 4-2 going into the ninth inning, the Power drew three straight walks to start the frame. After a sacrifice fly made it 4-3, Ashley Ponce hit what looked to be a game-ending double...

International Bonus Money Already Changing Hands

One thing that is new this year on the international market is that teams can trade from their bonus pools. A team can trade for bonus pool money, giving them the ability to acquire up to 50% of their original bonus pool. For example, the Pirates have a bonus pool of $2,426,000. That means they can trade for up to $1,213,000 in additional pool money. What I didn’t know until today...
