A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today. Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player page.

I am 21-year-old college student, and I was six months old the last time the Pirates had a winning season. So technically I was alive last time the Pirates had a winning season, but for argument’s sake I have never seen a winning season. I have witnessed the likes of Brian Giles, Jason Kendall, Jason Bay, Kris Benson, Aramis Ramirez, and plenty of others come and go while showing...
Wandy Rodriguez will be out for three more weeks. Photo Credit: David Hague
Wandy Rodriguez has received a few setbacks in the past week. He had some tightness in his forearm, and was shut down. Today he received Platelet Rich Plasma injections, which will put him out for three weeks. Even when he starts back up, you’re looking at a few weeks of rehab starts, which means the Pirates...
Below are the top Runs Created* totals in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The rankings include every hitter who had an at-bat for a Pirates’ minor league affiliate, not including DSL teams, and with no limitations on whether the hitter has prospect eligibility. Players who spent time at different levels are counted multiple times, once for each level,...
Pedro Alvarez launched his 10th June home run, most in a month for his career. (Photo Credit: David Hague)
From Pedro Alvarez homering into the Allegheny River to Garrett Jones homering into the center field bushes, the Pirates got the natural environment involved in their eighth-straight win Saturday night. It contrasted with the supernatural – the Bucs reaching 50 wins in June...

Anyone who has had the pleasure, or displeasure, of reading The Show Speak over the last few years understands the Pittsburgh Pirates are my Achilles heal when it comes to predictions - and it is not like I am some sort of a Nate Silver protege.
The Pirates are the primary reason I am formally scared scarred from making baseball predictions.
Let's look at the facts...
We have seen this scene before in Pittsburgh. The last two seasons, they have started off hot, building false confidence in their fan base that for the first time in two decades their Pirates were again relevant.
In 2011, they won more than 70 games for the first time since 2004, but with a 72-90 record, their losing season streak marched on to 19 straight years. In 2012,...
This comes straight from the Pirates themselves, as everyone that covers the team tweeted out something along these lines almost simultaneously:
#Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez has been given a PRP injection and will be on a rest, treatment and rehab plan for three weeks, per team.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma....
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in first place at the halfway mark of the 2013 Major League Baseball season. Not only that, they’re currently on a 9-game winning streak, and owners of the best record in baseball at 21 games over .500 (51-30). The last time they were this good, Barry Bonds had a normal sized body and Sid Bream was doing this.
It was 1992. The Montreal Expos were...
Pirate Parrot who is the mascot for the Pittsburgh Pirates tried his best, but failed, to snag a foul ball during Sunday’s game between the Pirates and Brewers. The result is a pretty great .GIF

A month ago, I wrote that it was time to take the Pirates seriously, as their 33-20 record was a strong enough start to put them squarely in the playoff mix, even if we didn’t think they were going to keep playing like a .622 team going forward. Well, since that post was published, the Pirates have gone 18-10, which translates into a .642 winning percentage. Rather than beginning...
Brewers (32-46) at Pirates (49-30)
7:15 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
The first place Pittsburgh Pirates go for eight in a row tonight against the last place Milwaukee Brewers. PNC Park should be sold out for the fifth straight game (it’s Fireworks Night, after all) and it should be a great atmosphere on the North Shore.
Tonight’s game is on FOX, but only...
This is how the first half of the season comes to a close: with a 2 1/2 hour rain delay that puts Charlie Morton on the shelf after just two innings and 22 pitches. With five perfect Vin Mazzaro innings in relief of Morton. With Justin Wilson, Bryan Morris, Jason Grilli, and Mark Melancon all following Mazzaro's masterful work with scoreless innings of their own. With Tony Watson...
The West Virginia Power took the four series in Lakewood today, with a comeback win, giving them three wins against the BlueClaws in this set and they have now beat them in 13 of 16 meetings this year. Down 4-2 going into the ninth inning, the Power drew three straight walks to start the frame. After a sacrifice fly made it 4-3, Ashley Ponce hit what looked to be a game-ending double...
It appears the Pittsburgh Pirates paid a small price for their ninth straight victory, as a brief bullpen session in the 14th inning from Jeff Locke has them in need of a starter for their opener against Philadelphia.
The Pirates' track record of plugging holes in their rotation, however, couldn't be much more successful.
Heading into July with the best record in baseball...
