He also has a 1.84 ERA and a .178 BAA during that span. Josh Bell has a .365/.459/.577 line in 52 at-bats in the month of August. Dilson Herrera stole his tenth base of the year.   A-: JAMESTOWN JAMMERS Box Score Result: State College 2, Jamestown 0 Starting Pitcher: Shane Carle, RHP (2.12) – 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Harold Ramirez, CF (.307) – 1-for-2, 2 BB, SB Other Notable Performers: Edwin Espinal, 1B (.284) – 2-for-4 Elvis Escobar, RF (.242) – 2-for-4 Game Notes: Shane Carle, taken in the 10th round this year, has a 2.12 ERA in 46.2 innings, with a 39:4 K/BB ratio. Ulises Montilla has a four game hitting streak, going 5-for-16 with a triple and a homer in that stretch. Montilla was slumping for a while, after showing a lot of promise with the bat in the first month of the season. Enyel Vallejo hit his third homer of the year, and also added two doubles. All three homers have come in the last nine games. In his last ten games he has a .333/.364/.595 line in 42 at-bats with two doubles and three homers.

Pirates Notebook: Gerrit Cole Stays in Rotation, But For How Long?

Gerrit Cole has already passed the number of innings he threw in 2012. (Photo Credit: David Hague) All three times this year Gerrit Cole has pitched on at least a week of rest, he has gotten a quality start. In his nine other starts, he has only four quality starts. Small sample size, certainly. We do not yet know if Cole is a better pitcher given more rest, and he will even tell...

Minor Moves: Waldron Promoted to Altoona, Singer Added to Bradenton

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a bunch of minor league moves today and at least one more should be announced soon due to roster space. The biggest name moved today was Tyler Waldron, who was injured earlier in the season and has been pitching for Bradenton since he returned three weeks ago. Also moving to Altoona from Indianapolis was catcher Ali Solis, who was demoted to make room...

Pirates Beat Arizona 6-2 to Expand Playoff Cushion, Match 2011 Win Total

Jose Tabata hit the game’s lone homer in the 8th inning for two insurance runs. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Gerrit Cole’s quality start and the Pirates lineup’s nine hits provided an important 6-2 series-opening win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The victory was Pittsburgh’s 72nd of the season, matching the win total of the 2011 Pirates that collapsed over the season’s...

Game 123 Preview: Pirates vs. DBacks

Diamondbacks (63-58) at Pirates (72-50) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Yesterday’s loss wiped out most of the good that Friday’s win did for the Bucs, so now they’re set for an important rubber match game this afternoon with Arizona. The Bucs are looking for their first series win in over a week and they are about to go back on the road for a west coast...

Game 120: Cardinals 6 Pirates 5

I don't think there's really a whole lot to say about this game. AJ Burnett hit the wall really early and blew a 4-0 lead, then Clint Hurdle did some silly things. The Pirates' bullpen pitched really well and kept them in the game, but the offense had trouble with the Cardinals' bullpen again, and so the Pirates lost.  I'm not actually hugely concerned with...

Cahill returns as D-backs try to bounce back

Jeff Locke's All-Star season has helped to give the Pirates one of the most efficient pitching staffs in the major leagues. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, would settle for some stability in their rotation. Locke takes the mound as the Pirates seeks a seventh straight home victory Saturday while facing Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill, who returns after a nearly seven-week stint...

Pirates 6, Diamondbacks 2

Jose Tabata hit a two-run homer, rookie Gerrit Cole pitched six solid innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2 on Friday night. Tabata's drive was his fourth of the season and came off J.J. Putz in the eighth inning, putting the NL Central-leading Pirates ahead by four runs. Tabata connected a day after he came off the bench and had three hits in...

Cardinals 6, Pirates 5

After one day of relief and joy, Pirate fans are back in a foul mood again after another extra inning loss to the Cardinals on Thursday. The Bucs botched another lead and threw away some chances late in the game, and eventually suffered their second walk off loss in three days. The loss drops their lead back to two games in the Central, and the Reds continue to close in at just two...

Jeff Locke and Trevor Cahill take the mound

The Pirates are one of FOX's "National Games" this afternoon, and I hate to keep harping on this because I know it gets old, but once again the Pirates being a "National Game" is terrible news for Pirate fans, because it means that you can only legally watch the game if you live in the Pittsburgh market or a non-California NL West market. To be quite literal...

Cards beat Pirates in 12 innings, 6-5

After the Pirates scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning it looked like another wasted day for the Cardinals who had scored just two runs in the previous 18 innings and had just two hits in the game so far. The Cardinals came back to take the lead in the fifth saw the Pirates tie it in the eighth before the Cardinals scored in the 12th to win 6-5 on Thursday at Busch Stadium...

Jeff Locke takes on the Diamondbacks

While there was rightly a lot of focus put on the Pirates' series in Busch Stadium this week, it could be argued that their three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend is actually a little bit bigger. As it stands right now, the Pirates have a pretty firm grasp on some kind of National League playoff spot (the nature of which is to be determined, of course), but...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – Game 121

After an embarrassing road trip the Pirates are coming home. Seriously. The schedule is starting to get short. The Pirates really need to get their **** together or they’re going to find themselves in a one game playoff for their first playoff birth since 1992. Not something any Pirates fan should really want to see.…
