Last night, R.A. Dickey limited the Pittsburgh Pirates to one run on five hits while recording a career high 11 punch outs over seven innings of work; improving to 6-1 in the process:

Following the game, Dickey told reporters he had a great feel for his knuckleball, saying:

I had the best feel of [the knuckleball]. I could make it do different things, which not very often am I able to do that. A lot of times you throw it and it does what it’s going to do. Tonight, mechanically, I was in a place where I could get it do a couple of different things when I wanted it to. And that’s fun. That was the difference. It’s not always like that.”

thank you everyone for the support. we had a good one tonight. about 11 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @RADickey43 R.A. Dickey

Dickey has been outstanding for the Mets thus far in 2012.  His consistency is that of a lunch pail pitcher, showing up every day to do his job and give everything he has.  But Dickey’s performance is much more than that of a guy who is punching the clock and collecting a check.  Other than one bad start in Atlanta, in which he allowed eight runs over 4 1/3 innings, R.A. is 6-0 with a 2.37 ERA, turning in eight quality starts:

Seriously.  It’s so amazing.  He is quickly rising atop my favorite All-Time Mets list with every dancing knuckler and incredible post game pressers. Not to mention, he has an awesome beard.  The guy looks more like a guy you could find in a lumber jack competition than a Major League baseball field, and he has been – in my opinion – one of the better pitchers in MLB this season; making a strong case for a spot on this year’s NL All-Star roster.  He is that lunchpail pitcher……when you see him pitch it translates into hope for all of us. It’s like you or me out there as Dickey stated himself following his last start of 2011 seasn:

People in the stands can probably relate. They probably think they can get out there and throw 75 mph and get people out. There is a connection there. They probably can relate to me. … It’s hard to throw Bobby Parnell‘s 102 mph, but everybody can throw a knuckleball.”

From his attitude towards the game, the fans, and his teammates as well as his performance on the field, Dickey has been excellent.  Frankly, I think his awesomeness deserves it’s own term, so I go back to the ‘R.A.diculous’ tag we gave him last season.  Wonder if we can get that hash tag going on Twitter. #R.A.DICULOUS
