Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers avoided a sweep and a two game losing streak with a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday afternoon. The win though not of been possible if it wasn’t for Ryan Raburn… yes that Ryan Raburn. In the 8th inning with the Tigers up 3-2, Josh Harrison hit a deep fly ball to left that looked like it would surely tie up the game. WATCH RABURN’S HOME RUN SAVING CATCH Raburn however had other ideas as he tracked the ball to the warning track to rob Harrison and a girl in a rainbow bikini sitting in the front row. Raburn also finished the day going 1 for 4 at the plate. Ref: MLB.com

Verlander goes the distance in 3-2 win over Pirates

The Tigers avoided the sweep Sunday afternoon at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 3-2 victory from PNC Park. Justin Verlander went the distance for Detroit allowing 2 runs (both earned) on five hits with 1 walk and seven strikeouts. Verlander’s only real blemish of the game came in the 7th inning when Garrett Jones hit a 2 run home run to tie the game. “I actually...

Game 2012.72: Tigers at Pirates

Detroit Tigers, 34-37, 3 1/2 games behind Cleveland. The Tigers couldn’t touch Cy Lincoln, McCutchen got an 0-2 fastball he liked very much, and that was that, a quick tidy victory for the Pirates. Well, the Tigers got the obligatory solo home run, and have still not been shut out this season.  So there’s that. Also Delmon Young got a walk, for those of you have have been holding...

Verlander throws complete game in Tigers' win

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Justin Verlander pitched a five-hitter Sunday, Quintin Berry hit a two-run shot for his first major league home run and the Detroit Tigers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2. Berry also scored the go-ahead run on Delmon Young's single in the eighth, an inning after Garrett Jones tied it with a two-run homer. Five weeks after he took a no-hitter into the ninth...

Historic MLB Strikeout Race: Adam Dunn vs Justin Verlander

MLB Week in Review: 6/25/12 The south side of Chicago is ablaze with 1st place team, greatest stance of my lifetime taking over 3B and a historic K race. Adam Dunn is leading the majors in HRs and top 10 in many other offensive categories. But he is heading toward a stratospheric K destination no man has traveled. The race is on. It’s the week in review! www.BattingStanceGuy.com...

Game 70: Tigers 3 Pirates 2

For one brief, shining moment this afternoon, it looked like the Pirates were going to pull off an incredibly unlikely comeback against Justin Verlander this afternoon. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Kevin Correia somehow shored up the slopes against the Tigers' exlposive offense and kept the game within reach until Garrett Jones hit an unlikely home run off of...

Revenge of the struck out?

Last night's win was a good thing for the Pirates, because over the next two afternoons they're going to face Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, who combined to strike them out 27 times in 16 innings last month. It's true that this Pirate team is a bit different from the Pirate team that Verlander and Scherzer so thoroughly dominated, in that it looks like they can generally...

Justin Verlander, Quintin Berry Help Detroit Tigers Avoid Sweep in Pittsburgh

Verlander retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings, to close out his eighth victory. Continue reading →

Tigers 3, Pirates 2

Justin Verlander narrowly out-duels Kevin Correia and Chris Resop

Justin Verlander pitched his way to a complete game victory over the Pirates for the second time in as many tries, but this one did not come nearly as easily as the first. In fact, the Bucs were able to turn what looked like a lost cause into a dramatic victory and a sweep…but instead came up just short. One of the reasons the game seemed like a lost cause what the Bucs’ starting...

Miguel Cabrera’s Armchair Zone Rating: Results

Yesterday, in these pages, I suggested that possibly — if not probably — Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander could have entered the seventh inning of his Sunday start against Pittsburgh in pursuit of his third career no-hitter. The basis for that suggestion rested on the fact that both of the hits he allowed before that seventh inning were (a) of the infield variety and (b...

Bucs lose in brutal fashion

Ugh. Sunday was an acceptable loss. It was Kevin Correia against Justin Verlander and the Bucs still almost won. Monday was just one of those nights where nothing seems to go right. Shake it off and move on. But fans have every right to be upset with this one, as the Bucs squandered a ton of chances and fell by one run. The theme began developing early on, when the Pirates quickly...

Armchair Zone Rating: Miguel Cabrera on Sunday

With the exception of a seventh inning that saw him concede three well-struck hits — including a homer to Garrett Jones — and two runs, Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander was excellent on Sunday in Pittsburgh, striking out seven, walking just one, and inducing weak contact all day (box). Indeed, despite the fact that Verlander entered that seventh inning having allowed two...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers – Game 71

Great win yesterday.  Who thought the Pirates even had a chance to sweep this team?  Hell, I questioned if they were going to even win the series! Recap from last night. My thoughts on the Jordan Staal trade.   First Pitch: 1:35 PM EST Where To Watch:  Root Sports, MLB.TV, FS-D   Justin Verlander, RHP [...]
