A Leominster, Mass., police officer was placed on paid leave pending a disciplinary hearing after an internal investigation showed he directed a racial slur at Carl Crawford of the Boston Red Sox while the outfielder was rehabbing in Manchester, N.H.

"It surprised me he was a police officer," Crawford said of the July 5 incident. "It's disappointing and all that kind of stuff. I just want to put that stuff behind me and not worry about that stuff anymore."

The officer who has been place on leave, John Perreault, was off duty when the incident took place. Perreault has been a Leominster police officer for five years, the Worcester Telegram reported. Earlier this week, authorities said it was an ethical issue, not an offense that carries charges.

According to the Leominster Sentinel and Enterprise, Crawford was referred to as a "Monday," which, according to UrbanDictionary.com, can be used as a derogatory term for a black person.

"He actually called me a racial slur to begin the game," Crawford said at the time. "He was the only one I had a problem with. People in Boston don't even do that. So I don't know what that was about. It's not that bad in Boston, like that."

Crawford was getting into playing shape with the Class AA Portland, Maine, Sea Dogs against New Hampshire Fisher Cats when the incident occurred. The left fielder said the fan was using a racial slur while criticizing his $142 million contract.

Crawford, who is African-American, signed seven-year deal with the Red Sox before last season. He hit .255 in 2011 and has made his season debut Monday after elbow ligament surgery and wrist and groin injuries.
