No trade acquisition is likely to be as important to the Cubs as Aramis Ramirez's return to form. ''You have to ask the other guys,'' Ramirez said of the effect his presence has on the lineup. ''But anytime you lose your cleanup hitter, it's going to affect the lineup.'' His loss was noticeable each time the Cubs struggled to score. Their other big hitters slumped while manager Lou Piniella shuffled the lineup, trying to find a combination that filled the void in the No. 4 hole.
