The Texas Rangers added another name to the catching mix Wednesday by picking up Eli Whiteside on a waiver claim from Toronto.
Whiteside, 33, has been busy this offseason as he's been claimed on waivers three times. He was acquired by the New York Yankees on a claim from San Francisco in early November. The Yankees designated him for assignment earlier this month and he was picked up by Toronto.
The Rangers believe he's capable of being a backup for the club.
"I have always heard very good things about Whiteside's ability to catch and throw, and particularly to work with the staff," Texas general manager Jon Daniels said. "We're not necessarily done looking at the catching area, but we're very comfortable he can handle the backup role as he's done in SF."
As of now, Whiteside would be backing up Geovany Soto, who signed a one-year deal with the Rangers earlier this month.
