The Texas Rangers' contract with Dominican Jairo Beras has been approved by Major League Baseball, which has suspended the 17-year-old outfielder for providing a false date of birth.
The signing and the suspension were announced Thursday.
Texas signed Beras for a $4.5 million signing bonus last spring, but there were then questions about his age.
Major League Baseball said the contract was being approved, but that Beras will not be able to participate in official games until next July 1 after providing a false date of birth in connection with his registration with the league.
Beras will be allowed to participate in workouts and practices during his suspension.
