The Texas Rangers hired Dave Magadan to be their hitting coach, ESPN Dallas reported Friday. Magadan had been the Boston Red Sox hitting coach since 2006. He had an option for next season, but the club gave him permission to pursue jobs with other teams. The Rangers reassigned Scott Coolbaugh to another position in the organization. General manager Jon Daniels said the club would have kept Coolbaugh as hitting coach if Magadan had turned down the job. "We feel like we've strengthened our big league club and our whole organization by bringing in one of the best," Daniels said. "We think Scott is an asset to the organization and talented and belongs here with the Rangers. We just felt like we had a chance to get one of the best in the business." The Rangers were first in the American League with 808 runs scored and fourth with 200 home runs. They were also third in on-base percentage and second in slugging percentage. The Rangers batted .273, just one point behind the leading Los Angeles Angels. However, the Rangers struggled in the middle of the season and then gave up their division lead to the Oakland A's the last week of the regular season. The two-time defending AL champions were eliminated by the Baltimore Orioles in the wild-card game. Magadan said his decision to go to Texas was because the team is in a "reload instead of rebuild" mode.
