Texas Rangers' newly-acquired outfielder/first baseman Lance Berkman says that he is at 80% recovery from two knee surgeries as Spring Training begins. He reports having no issues while swinging a bat and can begin infield drills. The Rangers’ main goal with Berkman is not necessarily having him play in Spring Training games right away but preparing him for the regular season, which for the Rangers begins on March 31. Berkman will field grounders at first, but manager Ron Washington said that Berkman will not participate in outfield drills for some time to come. Washington stated that Berkman will get plenty of at bats, even if in Minor League games, and he should be ready for Opening Day. Berkman signed a contract for $10 million for 2013 plus a $12-million club option for 2014. He is a career .294 hitter with 360 home runs and 1200 RBI. He played in only 32 games for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012 but helped the Cardinals to a 2011 World Series title.
