Wade Miley is off to a hot start. Even though he took a no-decision in an eventual Diamondbacks’ loss, he continued his masterful pitching — 6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 7 K/0 BB.He currently stands with a great 23 K/7 BB ratio in 26 innings and his 2.77 ERA and 1.08 WHIP are improvements on last year’s Rookie of the Year runner up (for the record, he should have won it).According to BrooksBaseball.net, Miley has increased the usage of his sinker (46% up from 40%) which can explain his increase of ground ball rate from 43.3% to 50.0%. However, the change I’m interested in is his increased strikeout rate. He’s missing more bats and his control is still above average. If he can continue this trend we may have to rethink on how we value Miley for 2013 and beyond.4/22 RecapBryan and I have expressed our concerns over Will Middlebrooks (1-for-4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI) and his first three weeks couldn’t be any more spot on to the type of player he is. Other than his 3-HR performance on April 7, Middlebrooks has played in 17 games with a .132 BA, 6 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 BB, and 24 K. Yup.Despite his early-season struggles, Allen Craig still has shown that he’s an RBI machine. His slash of .250/.288/.338 is underwhelming to say the least, but his 14 RBI are tied for 14th-best in the league. However, he has two consecutive two-hit games and has 5 RBI in his last three games.I talked about Kyle Seager yesterday, but he now has a home run in two consecutive games and also three consecutive multi-hit games. Over his 11-game hitting streak he is batting .381 with 6 R, 7 2B, 2 HR, and 8 RBI.Looking AheadTuesday’s Probable StartersA full schedule, including two double-headers, gives fantasy owners plenty of pitching options today. Again, these recommendations are for 10-12 team leagues. Bold = Start.Ricky Nolasco (MIA) @ Kevin Correia (MIN) — I’ll post what I said yesterday: The Marlins lineup is bad, and if you can overlook the lack of strikeouts then Correia is a good QS option with a low WHIP. Starting Nolasco on your team is like sticking your hand in a box not knowing what’s in there.Jose Fernandez (MIA) @ Mike Pelfrey (MIN) — Fernandez may not pitch more than five innings, but they’ll be a great five innings. When’s the last time Pelfrey gave you a great five innings?Bartolo Colon (OAK) @ Alfredo Aceves (BOS) — 17 runs were scored last night and these pitchers may continue that trend.R.A. Dickey (TOR) @ Miguel Gonzalez (BAL) — Dickey seems to be back on track, but Gonzalez continues to be a streaky pitcher.Wade Davis (KC) @ Max Scherzer (DET) — Davis shut down the hot Braves last week, but the Tigers are a more polished offense. Scherzer is coming off one of his best starts ever.Phil Hughes (NYY) @ David Price (TB) — His struggles aside, you cannot bench Price. Hughes is a good option in deeper leagues, but not 10-12 team leagues that I’m trying to help out.Zach McAllister (CLE) @ Jose Quintana (CHW) — Quintana has been great (13.2 IP, 8 baserunners, 14 K) and has already dominated the Indians once this year. I’m also taking the chance on McAllister today as the White Sox offense is really struggling.Hisashi Iwakuma (SEA) @ Bud Norris (HOU) — Iwakuma may not be at home, but the Astros make everyone feel at home. Norris is much better at home so he’s worth a start as well.Alexi Ogando (TEX) @ Jason Vargas (LAA) — No thanks on both counts.Mike Minor (ATL) @ Jeff Francis (COL) — Even with the game at Coors Field, Minor has been too good to sit.Adam Wainwright (STL) @ Ross Detwiler (WAS) — Wainwright is a must-start no matter the opponent. Detwiler has been great to start the year, but the lack of strikeouts make him a deeper league option.Jeff Locke (PIT) @ Cole Hamels (PHI) — Hamels has to turn it around soon right?Carlos Villanueva (CHC) @ Tony Cingrani (CIN) — Cingrani was good in his debut, but he threw 102 pitches and allowed 8 baserunners in 5 IP against the Marlins. Still, the strikeouts are a guarantee and valuable in fantasy.Clayton Kershaw (LAD) @ Jonathan Niese (NYM) — Two solid pitchers in what should be a low-scoring affair.Julio Teheran (ATL) @ Jon Garland (COL) — Unlike Minor, Teheran hasn’t been very good and doesn’t have my clearance to start in Coors Field.Yovani Gallardo (MIL) @ Clayton Richard (SD) — Maybe pitching in Petco is exactly what Gallardo needs to get some momentum going.Patrick Corbin (ARI) @ Matt Cain (SF) — Corbin has been solid despite facing some good lineups and he gets to face a surprisingly struggling Cain.#ProfStatsNote: We are going to start a new trend (literally) where we post fun and interesting stats we find around the baseball twittersphere with the hashtag #ProfStats. We encourage our readers to do the same, either through your own research or something you come across on the web, and we will post them in our daily recaps!Via @junkstatsThe Marlins have allowed 3 or fewer runs in 10 of 19 games (that’s good). They’re just 3-7 in those games (that’s bad).Jake Arrieta, who was demoted today, has allowed 4 MLB grand slams. No one has allowed more since Arrieta’s debut.Via @ESPNStatsInfoAthletics: loss snaps 8-game win streak vs Red Sox (which was their longest win streak against them since 1932)Felix Hernandez: 3rd Mariners pitcher with 100 wins, joining Jamie Moyer and Randy Johnson. The Cubs have 5 blown saves by 5 different pitchers this seasonVia @MLBStatoftheDayThe RedSox are the only team whose starters have not given up more than 4 runs all season. The Orioles’ Nick Markakis has 6 career walkoff hits – all of them singles.
