Kelly Johnson and Shelley Duncan homered, James Loney had three RBIs and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 Wednesday night to snap a four-game skid. Matt Moore (3-0) gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. Although his streak of scoreless starts ended at two, the left-hander has accounted for three of the Rays' five wins this season. The six runs were the most the Rays scored in a game since a 6-0 win over Cleveland on April 6. Following that victory, Tampa Bay lost seven of eight before turning it around against the Orioles. After going 1 for 34 with runners in scoring position in their previous five games, the Rays went 4 for 11 in those situations, including a two-run double in the fourth by Loney that put Tampa Bay ahead for good. Loney went 3 for 3 to raise his batting average from .167 to .242. Johnson (2 for 5) went from .200 to .229, and Duncan got two hits to boost his average 44 points to .258. Adam Jones homered for the Orioles, who had f...

A genius versus accepted dugout wisdom

I have often leaned against the tide when it comes to defending the role of a closer. But managers do take it too far and you would think someone with the reputation of Joe Maddon would not be one of those guys who goes with accepted dugout wisdom. But he does. What is that accepted dugout wisdom? If you are on the road, you do not pitch your closer in a tie game because if you...

Astro, gnome headline Rays promotions

The Rays have plenty of promotions planned for home games this season, and the upcoming six-game homestand against the A's and Yankees feature two of the more interesting ones. Sunday's series finale against the A's will feature a bobblehead of David Price's dog, Astro. The figurine will be available for children 14 and younger, while supplies last. That game will...

Q&A: Kyle Farnsworth, an Intimidating Career

Kyle Farnsworth is intimidating. The Tampa Bay Rays right-hander throws hard and isn’t afraid to come inside. He is also a sculpted 6-foot-4, 240 pounds with a background in martial arts. Charging the mound against him has never been a good idea. That tough-guy image has overshadowed a long and mostly successful career. Farnsworth has never been a star, but he has appeared in 814...

Matt Wieters hits walk-off grand slam

If there’s anything better than a walk-off win, it’s a walk-off extra inning win.  If there’s anything better than a walk-off extra inning win, it’s a walk off extra inning home run.  If there’s anything better than a walk-off extra inning home run, it’s a walk-off extra inning grand slam.  Touch ‘em all, Matt Wieters, you did just that!  The Baltimore Orioles defeated...

David Price takes a line drive to the…ouch (GIF)

Rays pitcher David Price throws hard.  Orioles outfielder Adam Jones swings hard.  On Thursday, Jones connected on a Price fastball and sent it back up the box and almost back up through Price and out his mouth. Fun fact: Price picked it up and threw Jones out at first. Not-so-fun fact: Pitchers rarely wear jock straps.  Nice save, Dave. via Reddit

Tampa Bay Rays struggles continue, fall 5-4 to Baltimore

Baseball is a game of streaks and the Tampa Bay Rays are suffering through a losing one right now. Tampa dropped their fourth consecutive game on Tuesday night, a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles. The Rays have started the year a franchise worst 4-9, an incredible record given the horrible teams that have preceded this current group of men. On the bright side for...
