Elliot Johnson and Ben Zobrist homered, Carlos Pena ended an extended slump with two doubles and two RBIs, and the Tampa Bay Rays held on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-8 Sunday and avert a three-game sweep. James Shields earned his sixth win for the Rays, who snapped a three-game skid and won for only the second time in eight games. Tampa Bay entered the series tied atop the AL East with Baltimore. This victory was anything but easy. The Rays led 7-1 in the fourth inning and 9-6 in the eighth, but it was 9-8 when Fernando Rodney got Matt Wieters to ground out in the ninth with runners on second and third with two outs. Rodney got his 10th save in 10 tries in a game that earlier appeared was going to be blowout. Zobrist had three RBIs and Johnson scored three runs and drove in two. Pena was 3 for 37 with 14 strikeouts in May before hitting a third-inning double and adding a two-run double in the fourth to make it 7-1. After Baltimore closed to 7-6 in the seventh, Johnson and Z...

Rays retroactively place Jennings on 15-day DL

TORONTO (AP) -- The Tampa Bay Rays have placed outfielder Desmond Jennings on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12, and recalled utilityman Stephen Vogt from Triple-A Durham. Vogt was expected to join the Rays in time for Monday night's game at Toronto. Jennings left a May 6 game against Oakland with a sprained left knee, but has made two pinch-hit appearances since...

Rays Roundup: Injured Rodriguez Becomes Hero

In today's edition of Rays Roundup: Infielder Sean Rodriguez may have been hurt Sunday, but that didn't stop him from helping the Rays seal their 9-8 victory over the O's, Desmond Jennings is still hobbled by a sore knee, Hideki Matsui is one step closer to the major leagues and B.J. Upton has a game he'll soon want to forget on Mother's Day.

Rays on top in AL East with close win over O's

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Elliot Johnson and Ben Zobrist homered, Carlos Pena ended an extended slump with two doubles and two RBIs, and the Tampa Bay Rays held on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-8 Sunday and avert a three-game sweep. James Shields earned his sixth win for the Rays, who snapped a three-game skid and won for only the second time in eight games. Tampa Bay entered the series...

Rib injury sends Orioles' Reynolds to DL

The Baltimore Orioles have placed third baseman Mark Reynolds on the team's rapidly expanding 15-day disabled list. Reynolds has a pulled muscle in his rib cage. He is batting .191 with two homers and nine RBI. The injury occurred during batting practice Friday, manager Buck Showalter said. Reynolds said Saturday, ''It's not too bad, but it's one of those things...

Rays make five errors as Orioles win

The Tampa Bay Rays know what it takes to win, and making five errors in a game is certainly not part of that formula. And so, after the Rays bungled their way to a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night, manager Joe Maddon didn't have to dig deep to come up with an explanation for the defeat. ''There's a fine line between winning and losing,''...

Orioles Acquire Mike Belfiore From D'Backs For Josh Bell

The Orioles traded third-baseman Josh Bell over to Arizona last month, and the Diamondbacks now have sent over left-handed pitcher Mike Belfiore to complete that deal. Bell was mostly a disappointment in Baltimore after coming over from the Dodgers in the George Sherrill trade. His plate discipline went south, as he hit just .200/.221/.264 when he got a chance in the Majors and posted...

Dugout Digest - Matt Moore's disappointing start

Coming into this season, Rays rookie starter Matt Moore was expected to be one of the Rays' best starters. After seven starts, Moore has a 5.31 ERA, 34 strikeouts, 22 walks, and has allowed six homers. These aren't really great signs. His bad ERA is boosted by a 4.98 FIP and 5.01 xFIP. He's only getting ground balls in 33.1% of plate appearances. His BABIP is high at...

Rays-Blue Jays Preview

If his recent starts are any indication, Brandon Morrow could be on his way to making the jump to top-flight starting pitcher this season. The Tampa Bay Rays didn't appear very impressed with the right-hander last month. Morrow looks to win a career-high fifth consecutive start and exact a measure of revenge against the Rays in the opener of a two-game series Monday night at...

Yankees vs. Orioles: You need to beat the birds

The New York Yankees are in Baltimore to face the first-place Orioles for two quick games starting tonight. New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles April 24, 2011 (Photo credit: Wikipedia) The O’s have been playing some great baseball lately but the Yankees have won four of the six times the two AL East rivals have faced each other. Can the Orioles make the playoffs for the first...

True Believer

That’s it. I can’t deny it anymore. The Orioles are real; to deny it at this point is to deny math, logic and reality. The Birds did get beaten up by the Rangers a bit, but who hasn’t. The Orioles still have the second-best record in the American League, lead the league in homers, are getting solid starting pitching and shut down bullpen work. This is not a fluke. Repeat...
