The Tampa Rays transferred third baseman Evan Longoria to the 60-day disabled list and activated outfielder Sam Fuld from the 60-day DL. Fuld completed a rehab stint with Triple-A Durham. He hasn't played this season because of wrist surgery. The Rays moved Longoria to the 60-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury that has sidelined him since April 30. He was placed on the disabled list May 1, and the procedural move will not impact his timetable for return of early August.

Longoria takes a step forward

The Tampa Bay Rays -- finally -- are talking encouragingly about Evan Longoria. After Longoria went through a full workout Tuesday in Baltimore, manager Joe Maddon said the slugger was "closer than you think" to starting a short rehab assignment that would be the last step before returning to the major league lineup. Initially the Rays would use Longoria, who has been...

Rays end experiment with aging Matsui

The Hideki Matsui era in Tampa Bay began with a bang three months ago, a jammed press conference at Tropicana Field that included some 40 members of the Japanese media, followed by a pair of towering home runs in two of his first three games. It ended Wednesday afternoon with a whimper, a short press release announcing that Matsuis days as a Ray were over. The slumping Japanese...

Rays have chance to make up ground on road

It doesnt get any easier from here, folks. In fact, the Rays nine-game road trip that begins Tuesday in Baltimore before heading to points west in Anaheim and Oakland looks downright daunting. Following a disappointing performance in their recent 10-game homestand a 4-6 effort marked by horrendous hitting and barely three runs scored per contest the Rays now venture into dangerous...

Veteran outfielder Hideki Matsui has been designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays according to Rick Harmon of the Tampa Tribune. This could be the end of his career. Matsui signed a minor league deal wit the Rays back in April and hit .147/.214/.221 with 2 HR's, 7 RBI's and a 24 OPS+ in 103 plate appearances with the Rays this season. Darth Vader's first pitch at Mariners-Rays game was embarrassing for the Dark Side (Video)

The Tampa Bay Rays held Star Wars Day at Tropicana Field on Sunday before their game against the Seattle Mariners, and among the festivities, Darth Vader threw the ceremonial first pitch. Unfortunately, the throw Darth Vader delivered was so far outside of home plate that it prompted laughter and boos from the crowd. It's safe to say "The Force" was not strong...

Roberts homers in Rays debut

Ryan Roberts certainly made a good impression on his new Tampa Bay Rays teammates. After arriving in the Camden Yards visitors' clubhouse around 5 p.m., Roberts started at third base in his Rays debut, homering and reaching base two other times in Tampa Bay's 10-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. "I just wanted to come over and blend in and do my part," Roberts...

Ichiro Suzuki, Hideki Matsui and BABIP Aging

Two players I have always rather enjoyed — Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui — are in the twilights of their careers. And not only that, they are both having relatively miserable seasons at the plate. At present, Suzuki is at a career-low 77 wRC+ and .281 wOBA. Matsui — playing in a reserve/pinch-hitting role for the first time in his career — has a disastrous 18 wRC+ and ...

Prior to Robert being DFA...
