ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Tampa Bay's Jeff Niemann pitched into the seventh inning in his final tuneup for the regular season, helping the Rays beat rookie Matt Moore and a team comprised of mostly minor league prospects 2-1 on Wednesday.
Niemann allowed one run and three hits in 6 1-3 innings. Moore, a 22-year-old left-hander who made his major league debut and won a playoff start before setting foot in a big league camp for the first time this spring, yielded two runs and seven hits over seven innings.
The Rays open the season Friday against the New York Yankees. They'll do it without outfielders B.J. Upton and Sam Fuld, who were placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday..
Reserve catcher Robinson Chirinos also was placed on the DL. Closer Kyle Farnsworth likely is headed there, too, with a sore right elbow.
