The Tampa Bay Rays on Monday placed rookie catcher Jose Lobaton on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ligament in his left knee.
Recalled from the minor leagues Thursday, Lobaton suffered the injury in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Boston. He left after the eighth inning of the 16-inning marathon.
To replace Lobaton, the Rays recalled catcher Robinson Chirinos from Triple-A Durham, where he was batting .265.
The Rays have had very little stability behind the plate this season. Starter John Jaso was hitting just .222 before going on the DL with an oblique muscle injury and backup Kelly Shoppach is hitting .173.
