BOSTON (AP) -- David Ortiz doubled in the go-ahead run for his seventh consecutive hit and the Boston Red Sox won their third straight game over the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-4 on Sunday.
Boston, on a tear since a season-opening 1-5 road trip, can complete a series sweep in Monday's traditional Patriots' Day game that starts at 11:05 a.m. Last year the Red Sox were just 2-7 at home against the Rays.
Ortiz, who signed a one-year contract in the offseason, is off to one of the best starts of his career.
He's 16 for 36 in nine games in April, a month in which he has struggled in recent years. He had 20 hits in 22 April games in 2009, eight in 16 games in 2010 and 23 in 25 games in 2011.
But on Sunday with the score tied 4-all in the sixth inning, he doubled home Kevin Youkilis, who had walked.
Ortiz went 4 for 5 with a homer and five RBIs in Saturday's 13-5 win. Then he doubled, singled and doubled in his first three at-bats on Sunday before grounding out to first to end t...

Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford is expected to play in extended training games this week, part of his rehabilitation of a surgically repaired left wrist.Crawford is hoping to join the team in May, with the shoulder injury to center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury making his return even more urgent. Crawford had no issues during batting practice Friday and Saturday.“I’m going...
BOSTON -- A trip to Fenway was the right remedy for Cody Ross. For the second straight day, the 31-year-old drilled a home run over the Green Monster and keyed the Red Sox' 6-4 victory over the Rays. Before the trip to Boston, the outfielder had cooled off from his remarkable spring -- where he unloaded six long balls -- and had posted a .211 average by only mustering four hits...
Scott Atchison had to earn his way onto the Red Sox roster out of spring training, and he's showing that the club made the right move by keeping him onboard. Atchison gave up a run in 1 1/3 innings of work in his first outing of the year, but he showed that he can still get it done at age 36 on Monday in Toronto. The right-hander tossed three scoreless innings and received the...
Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine questioned the commitment of third baseman Kevin Youkilis during a television interview on Sunday.
"I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason," Valentine told WHDH-TV prior to Sunday's game versus the Tampa Bay Rays.
"But (on Saturday) it seemed, you...
It wasn't the prettiest baseball move, but Kelly Shoppach's awkward slide to steal second base has plenty of admirers. The Red Sox' Facebook page invited fans to name Shoppach's slide, and after sifting through more than a thousand responses, he picked "The Stop, Shop and Roll" as his favorite. Shoppach's theft of second was the first stolen base ever...
Last night Bobby Valentine was quoted as saying “”I don’t think he’s as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason. But onSaturday it seemed, you know, he’s seeing the ball well, got those two walks, got his on-base percentage up higher than his batting average, which is always a good thing, and he’ll move on from there.” As...
After weighing in on the pregame controversy between Kevin Youkilis and Bobby Valentine, Dustin Pedroia has apparently been able to clear the air with his manager. While speaking to reporters after Monday's game, the Red Sox second baseman explained that he had spoken with his skipper and everything was behind them. See what else Pedroia had to say in this edition of Red Sox Clubhouse Uncut.
As the 100th anniversary of the Titanic rapidly sinks into history, the Discovery Channel and History2 have more Titanic specials than you can find on a McDonald’s menu.
Bobby Valentine is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fenway in the same vein. He has just acted like an iceberg and cut a hole into the soft underbelly of Kevin Youkilis.
Valentine said that...
With Jacoby Ellsbury sidelined with a dislocated right shoulder injury for at least the next two months, the Red Sox seem in line to add another outfielder to help provide depth. That could come in the way of acquiring Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd, who has 10 years of major league experience. During the offseason, [...]
The weekend's four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays may not have finished exactly how the Red Sox would have hoped, but there were certainly a number of positives to be excited about. While Boston wasn't able to lock down the series sweep over the weekend, taking three of four games from the division-rival Rays is a great feat. The successful series appears to have elevated...

The Red Sox have turned things around and it appears that the pitching staff is finally finding their groove. After taking three of four from the Tampa Bay Rays over the long weekend, the Red Sox have kicked things into high gear and are ready to welcome the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees to town. Jon Lester still looks like the ace of this Red Sox staff, tossing two gems in...
Despite nearly sweeping a four-game series to open their home schedule, the Boston Red Sox are dealing with another controversy during a tumultuous April.
The Texas Rangers, on the other hand, just keep rolling - even on the road.
The reigning AL champions try for their first 4-0 start away from home in 20 years Tuesday night, but they'll have to go through Red Sox ace Jon...
