Tampa Bay Rays closer Kyle Farnsworth, who has been on the disabled list all season with an elbow injury, was scheduled to begin his rehab assignment Monday night as the starting pitcher for the Class A Port Charlotte, Fla., Stone Crabs in their game against the St. Lucie Mets in Port Charlotte. Farnsworth went 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA and 25 saves in 2011, but he irritated his elbow during Spring Training and has not pitched during the regular season. Manager Joe Maddon has said if the team can get Farnsworth back by July, it would be a better option that making a move by the Trade Deadline. Last October, the Rays picked up Farnsworth's $3.3 million option for 2012. He will be a free agent after the season. In Farnsworth's absence, Fernando Rodney has been outstanding as the Rays' closer. He is 2-1 with an 0.94 earned run average and 18 saves.
