ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Matt Joyce fought his way through a torrential rainstorm Monday night, driving into town after a brief rehab assignment in Daytona. It was like a monsoon or something, it was brutal, he said Tuesday afternoon by his locker inside the Tampa Bay Rays clubhouse. I had to slow down to make sure I made it here. Inclement weather aside, Joyce couldnt get back to the Rays fast enough given the gray skies that have hovered both over him and the teams anemic offense the past month. Joyces strained left oblique felt surprisingly good after only a few days into his rehab work with Class A Charlotte and let the Rays know he was ready to return, After going 8-15 in his absence, they gladly responded with a welcome Matt. In fact, the man who has provided much of the punch to the recently punchless offense was immediately penciled into the lineup's cleanup spot Tuesday night against the Cleveland Indians. I got a chance to go play (with Charlotte) and everything felt great, he said. I played two games in Daytona and felt like my timing really wasnt that far off. I was seeing the ball pretty well and hit a couple of balls hard. I felt like I was ready. I told em and they said, Hey, come on up and lets go. To make room for Joyce, the Rays optioned utility infielder Will Rhymes back to Triple-A Durham. And then they turned their attention to trying to beat the Indians, following a 3-2 loss in the opener of a four-game series Monday, with one of their key pieces back in the offensive puzzle. Joyce, batting .279 with 11 homers and 34 RBI when went on the disabled list June 20, said the extra rest during the All-Star break benefited him. You take three days off to where you can just shut everything down and just try to stop pushing the envelope a little bit, he said. Sometimes everybody needs that and it really helps your body out. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon was understandably pleased, considering his team has hit .220 in its last 18 games dating back to June 18. The Rays have been held to seven hits or fewer in 15 of their last 20 games. So the return of his 2011 All-Star outfielder to the lineup could provide a much-needed boost. You can see the significance of one other name in the lineup and how it impacts us, he said of Joyces presence Tuesday. Maddon also said hes encouraged by the progress of outfielder Sam Fuld, coming back from wrist surgery. Fuld went 1 for 3 with a walk Monday night in Durham. "Hes reporting like hes feeling really good, he added. His body feels good. The wrist feels good. The timing is still off a little, but (overall) hes feeling pretty good. Maddon praised Rhymes, who batted .233 (.318 in his last 10 games), playing the field well (including turning a gem of a double-play against Boston over the weekend). But Maddon says hell benefit from getting more playing time in Durham, rather than spending most of his time on the Rays bench. Wills been playing good, he said. Hes a great guy. He plays our kind of game. He plays hard. Hes a great teammate. Hes outstanding actually ... its just one of those baseball moments. Close to 100 percent of his playing time is going to be gone by having Matt back. Joyce, meanwhile, couldnt feel better returning to the active roster, finally having the opportunity to help the team hes only been able to watch for the past month. The Rays have lost 12 of their last 18 and now rest precariously at 46-44, tied for the third with the Boston Red Sox in the AL East, though still in the thick of the wild card hunt. Were in a situation where were pushed against the wall and we have to really start winning games, he said. There are a lot of expectations. The guys just want to win. We know whats coming up and we know whats at stake. Youve got to have the ability to stay focused and not get overwhelmed by the situation, he added. We know whats at stake and everybody wants to win. Everybody wants to go to the playoffs. And obviously we want to keep the guys who we have and keep moving forward. You have to be able to relax, have fun and forget about the expectations and the pressures. This game comes with a lot of all of those. For Joyce, it also came with ample frustration, following a recent setback in his rehab assignment while sliding. But now hes ready to try and give the Rays a lift. Weve slid a little bit out of first place and obviously were not where we really want to be, he said. But hopefully, we can get on another run here.

2012 Fantasy Baseball, Week 15: Is James Shields A Good Buy Low Option?

James Shields After a magnificent 2011 that saw James Shields transform from innings eater to a bona fide ace, this year’s version leaves much to be desired. With the first half over, owners are being burnt by Shields to the tune of a 4.17 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. While regression was an obvious call when his name was up to be drafted, the results are so far off from the price paid....

After ejection, Maddon blames ump for changing game with blown call

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon has plenty to be frustrated about as his team continues to struggle. In the seventh inning Wednesday, with a Rays 4-0 lead against the Cleveland Indians slipping away, he vented against plate umpire Dan Iassogna. There had been an extremely questionable strike-three call against Rays right fielder Matt Joyce in the sixth inning. Then in the seventh...

Rays recall Lueke to help bullpen

The Tampa Bay Rays, still feeling the effects from Monday's 15-inning, 5-hour loss to the Oakland Athletics, have called up right-handed reliever Josh Lueke. Lueke was with the Rays coming out of spring training and has an 18.90 ERA in three games with the big league club. The 6-foot-5-inch, 235-pounder was 1-3 with a 4.72 ERA for Triple-A Durham before getting recalled to the...

Rays can go either way with pitchers

The industry-wide assumption is that if the Tampa Bay Rays fall out of contention, the pitcher they will trade is right-hander James Shields. Not necessarily. The Rays, deep in starting pitching, are open to moving any of their right-handed starters, major league sources say. A trade of Shields or Jeremy Hellickson likely would signal that the team is conceding the season. A trade...

Joel Peralta gets crossed up when Jose Molina and home plate umpire throw him baseballs at same time (Video)

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Joel Peralta was thrown for a loop when catcher Jose Molina and home plate umpire Mark Wegner threw a ball back to him at the same time during Monday night's game at Tropicana Field against the Cleveland Indians. It happened in the top of the seventh inning after Peralta made his first pitch to Indians batter Jason Kipnis, which popped out of Molina...

Long break hampers Rays' Cobb

Alex Cobb was concerned about the effects of a nine-day break between starts. As it turns out, he had good reason. The Tampa Bay Rays right-hander struggled in his first start since July 6, lasting only 3 1/3 innings while walking five Monday in a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians. In an effort to combat the inactivity, Cobb threw the equivalent of three innings in a simulated...

Moore looking to avenge last loss vs. Indians

While Matt Moore entered 2012 with very high expectations, he wasn't able to find much consistency during the first half of the season. He could get off to a rough start to the second against a Cleveland Indians club that hit him hard just over a week ago. Moore tries to avenge one of his more disappointing outings as the Tampa Bay Rays continue a four-game set with the visiting...

Indians 2, Rays 4: On Despair, Plastic Hips, and the Potential Wisdom of Rick Manning

7:06 PM – Three things that seem true: “Matt Moore is Tampa Bay’s starter for this game.” “Matt Moore pitches primarily with his left arm.” “The Indians will lose this game.” There’s a syllogism hiding in there somewhere, just waiting to be discovered. 7:30 PM – After Moore sends the Indians down in order in the top of the first, Josh Tomlin gets to work. Let’s...
