While casual baseball fans may not recognize the name, Alex Cobb figures to get his fair share of acclaim going forward. The Boston Red Sox are already familiar with the promising 25-year-old. Cobb looks to build on an impressive season debut as the Tampa Bay Rays go for a fifth consecutive win over Boston in the first of four Friday night at Fenway Park. After going 7-1 with a 3.09 ERA over his final 11 starts last year, Cobb (1-0, 0.00 ERA) picked up right where he left off Saturday in a 6-0 win over Cleveland. The right-hander threw 7 1-3 innings of four-hit ball, earning high praise from manager Joe Maddon. "(He) started out like gangbusters," Maddon told MLB's official website. "Everything was working - the fastball, the comebacker on the front hip of the lefties, really good curve, good changeup. ... He looked very, very good. Confidence is soaring and that's a great first game to build off." Cobb may be overshadowed by reigning AL Cy Young awa...

The Tampa Bay Rays Rock Some Lettermans

The Rays are taking a page out of the Houtson Texans playbook and doing a little team bonding with the help of some throwback letterman jackets. The result is TBD. I was not totally offended by the weather here today but really glad for the letterman jackets. twitter.com/RaysJoeMaddon/… — Joe Maddon (@RaysJoeMaddon) April 10, 2013 [Joe Maddon] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

Red Sox place John Lackey on 15-day DL

John Lackey was one start into his return from Tommy John surgery before he re-injured himself.  Fortunately, the injury was not to the elbow.  Even more fortunate was the fact that while it is a biceps strain, Lackey does not have a tear.  However, the 34-year old will have to spend some time on the DL.    Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe had the news. Lackey to DL and...

Clay Buchholz Strikes Out Eight in Win to Earn Amica Pitcher of the Week Honors

It would be difficult to get off to a better start than Clay Buchholz has in 2013. The 28-year-old righty has allowed just one run in two starts this season while striking out 12 in 14 innings. He has a 0.64 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a .184 batting average against. In Buchholz’ start on Monday he pitched seven innings, struck out eight and allowed three hits while walking four against...

Jackie Bradley Jr.’s Struggles Create Balancing Act, Make David Ortiz’s Impending Return More Important for Red Sox

The rookie wall has come early for Jackie Bradley Jr., and the outfielder’s struggles are twofold for the Red Sox. On one hand, it’ll be much easier for the Red Sox to send Bradley down when David Ortiz returns to the lineup. A demotion may have been in the cards at some point regardless, but it’s much easier for a team to justify sending down someone who’s hitting .120 than...

Boston Red Sox Show Power Despite Absence Of David Ortiz

Without David Ortiz, the Boston Red Sox lineup doesn’t look as good as the Boston faithful might hope. Ortiz played in Pawtucket on Thursday night and should return to the lineup soon, however, the boys of summer showed some power in his absence. First of all, we can look to the game in Toronto where they hit six home runs. Three came from Will Middlebrooks, and then solo shots...

Rays-Red Sox game postponed due to Weather

With heavy rain expected in Boston throughout the entire day, Major League Baseball offically postponed Friday's Rays/Red Sox game. No makeup date has been determined yet.  The Red Sox are coming off a tough series against the Baltimore Orioles in which they lost their first series of the season and dropped two out of three from the birds.  This weekend's weather is supposed...

Farrell: Hanrahan's job not on thin ice

After last night's debacle of an outing, Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan seems to already have some fans giving him the evil eye. Hanrahan came into the game in the 9th inning to try and get the save as the Sox had a two-run lead. Sounds simple, but the attempt was about as wild as some of his pitches, with the closer not only blowing the lead but giving up five runs as well. ...

Red Sox sellout streak comes to an end

After almost ten years of Fenway Park being filled to the brim for every home game, the Red Sox announced Wednesday that their sellout streak has come to an end. The streak that started on May 15, 2003, lasted 794 regular season games and, including playoffs, 820. The streak was a record across all four major sports leagues, surpassing the previous mark of 814 set by the NBA...
