The Tampa Bay Rays have signed pitcher Roberto Hernandez aka Fausto Carmona to a one-year deal worth $3.25mm, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
It is not clear yet if Hernandez will be in the starting rotation or bullpen as he has incentives in place for both scenarios, up to $1.25-million for innings pitched and up to $600,000 for a certain number of relief appearances.
Hernandez spent most of last season dealing with visa issues and fraud charges, as a result he was only able to make 3 starts where he allowed 15 runs in 14 2/3 innings.
In 2011, Hernandez (then Carmona) went 7-15 with a 5.25 ERA as a starter.
His last stop in the bullpen was in 2006 where he went 1-10 with a 5.42 ERA, but did have a career est 7.0 K/9.
