The Tampa Bay Rays new stadium talks seem to have have gone from dormant to a set of Formula One cars bunched together coming down the backstretch at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As all parties involved are beginning to open talks, the situation can begin getting a bit testy.
After a private firm made their pitch to the Rays about their stadium plans, the team has not responded until Thursday. Rays’ owner Stuart Sternberg sent a letter to St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster to amend the Tropicana Field contract.
Within the letter, it reads the following:
The Rays seek to collaborate with interested governmental and private parties to evaluate all potential ballpark sites in Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties. Through this collaboration, we can work constructively to determine the optimal ballpark location and design for our region.
Then, according to Shadow of the Stadium, a letter was sent to Hillsborough County Chairman Ken Hagan from Sternberg ready to talk:
As I am sure you are aware, we have been seeking a regional dialogue for quite some time.
With the Rays season now concluded, we stand ready to meet at your convenience.
Then on Friday morning, a report from The Tampa Tribune shows that Tampa Bay Lightning owner and his company purchased a piece of land just north of the Tampa Bay Times Forum that has been declared suitable for a baseball stadium.
Coincidence? Probably not. After all, the Lightning have made it be known that they enjoy a strong friendship with the Rays.
Will the bay area get a chance to call a future stadium “the house that Evan Longoria or David Price built?” Or will Mayor Bill Foster be known for not allowing the Rays to seek other avenues for a stadium, forcing the ownership to sell or relocate?
Stay tuned as this has become more interesting.
