ST. PETERSBURG Outfielder Rich Thompson, a career minor leaguer, has been acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies, the club announced Wednesday night prior to its game against the Boston Red Sox. To obtain the 33-year-old journeyman, the Rays swapped 25-year-old Durham outfielder Kyle Hudson, who was hitting .291 with the Bulls. Thompson has spent 13 seasons in the minors and not appeared in the majors since 2004, when he played six games with the Kansas City Royals. However, the Rays like his speed and his ability to serve as a backup centerfielder. Thompson has been enjoying a good season with the Phillies' Triple-A club in Lehigh Valley this season, hitting .307 (27-for-88) with no homers, 11 RBI and seven stolen bases. To make room on the active roster, outfielder Brandon Guyer was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 13 with a left shoulder strain. And to accommodate Thompson joining the 40-man roster, Jeff Niemann has been moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Thompson has stolen 442 bases in his minor-league career, including seven seasons of 40 or more including leading the International last year with 48. A left-handed hitter, he can play all three outfield positions. Guyer becomes the ninth Rays player to be placed on the disabled list this season. Vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said that the 25-year-old, who had just been recalled from Durham on May 9, hurt himself in the batting cage during the Baltimore series last week, but the team wanted to wait to see how he was progressing before making a move. "The last couple of days it was pretty clear that he was going to need some time off," Friedman said. "So with our second-string, third-string and fourth-string centerfielders being on the DL, we felt it was really important to get someone we felt really comfortable with in centerfield in the event that something happens to B.J. or B.J. needs a day off." "His key attribute is his speed and he uses it extremely well, both offensively and defensively," he added. "Profile-wise, he fit in really well with us." Thompson's plane landed shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday and he was scheduled to head straight for the Trop and join his new team. He'll be active for the game.
