August 13-15

The headline reads, the struggling Seattle Mariners come home to face the Tampa Bay Rays. One team is 10 games above .500, and one team is 10 games below .500.

Can you guess which is which?

Pitching match ups:
Rays RH Alex Cobb (6-8, 4.32 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Blake Beavan (7-6, 5.12)

Matchup | Preview

Over 50% of batted balls against Cobb end up as ground balls.  The Mariners have struggled against pitchers like Cobb this season, but coming off a pair of wins, and a Series win against the Angels could give them the confidence they need to play well in this game.

  • Current Line: 6-8 / 4.32 ERA / 24 BB / 62 SO / 1.30 WHIP
  • Right handed batters are hitting .294 against Cobb

Beaven had a his heart broken by his team after an impressive performance. However he has been great since returning from AAA.

  • Current Line: 7-6 / 5.12 ERA / 13 BB / 50 SO / 1.23 WHIP
  • Current Rays are batting just .240 against Beaven
Game 118: LHP – Matt Moore vs. RHP – Kevin Millwood

Moore has been a problem for the Mariners this season, he has pitched well consistently dropping his ERA through the season.  The 23 year old southpaw has stumped just about all the M’s batters, with the exception being Jesus Montero who has a .833 average against Moore in 6 at bats.

  • Current line: 9-7 / 3.73 ERA / 62 BB / 124 SO / 1.37 WHIP.

Millwood remains unimpressive but consistent.  He has won only 1 game in his last 10 outings.

  • Current Line: 4-10 / 4.38 ERA / 43 BB / 89 SO / 1.40 WHIP
Game 119:  RHP – Jeremy Hellickson vs. RHP – Felix Hernandez

In his last outing against Seattle Hellickson allowed only 1 run on six hits.

  • Current Line: 7-7 / 3.52 ERA / 46 BB / 79 SO / 1.33 WHIP

Felix showed some vulnerability, proving that he is human, but he should do well for this game.

Blake Beavan Rays vs. Mariners in Anaheim: Pitching, series preview, analysis and predictions

Rays RH Alex Cobb vs. Mariners RH Blake Beavan tonight

  • Current Line: 10-5 / 2.74  ERA / 44 BB /  162 SO / 1.10 WHIP
Rays vs. M’s Series Predictions

Game 1:

Could be a pretty evenly matched game, but I think Beaven has the edge.  If Seattle can play aggressive they should win.

Prediction:  Win (Rays 2 – Mariners 4)

Game 2:

Maybe Montero can provide a one man offense, but that will likely not be enough.

Prediction: Loss (Rays 5 – Mariners 2)

Game 3:

Who ever scores first wins.

Prediction: Loss (Rays 1 – Mariners 2)

Notes

Mariners OF Michael Saunders was a dreadful 2-for-34 on the club’s nine-game road trip.

Rays reliever J.P. Howell hasn’t allowed a run in 22 2/3 innings and is two outs away from surpassing the franchise record held by starter James Shields.

Seattle 1B Mike Carp will be re-examined after injuring his left hip during Sunday’s game.

My oh My! Top play of the week for the Seattle Mariners (video)

Montero Mash x2 Oh how sweet it is to beat the Angels in Anaheim. Especially off of their pride and joy Jarred Weaver. Jesus Montero went yard not once, but twice, in the 2nd, and 6th innings respectively against Weaver. For the Mariners slugger, it was homeruns number 11 and 12 on the year. Even with Hector Noesi exiled to Tacoma, the Mariners are looking like the winners in the...

Mariners place Mike Carp on disabled list

The Seattle Mariners have placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left groin muscle and recalled Justin Smoak from Triple-A Tacoma. Carp left Sunday's game at Los Angeles with discomfort after stretching for a throw in the fifth inning. He was hitting .308 with three doubles and a homer in his last 15 games and has a .206 this year with...

Mariners Minor League Report

Shortstop Nick FranklinPhoto Credit: Seattlepi.com It’s that time of year again. The season is winding down and once again the M’s are out of contention. But this is never a boring time of the year. As a matter of fact, quite the opposite. Now, we get to speculate and evaluate how the club’s top prospects are doing and who may get a September call-up to get his first taste...

Mariners Unable to Overcome Early Deficit Against Rays

Seattle Mariners starter Blake Beavan battled yet again on Monday night giving up 4 runs in 6 innings, striking out 4 and walking none. Prior to this start, Beavan had been on a roll winning 4 of his last 5 outings and only walking a whopping total of 2 batters in 34.1 innings, while striking out 24. His recent success was been tied to a retooling of mechanics and this appears to...

Rodney blows save in Rays loss to Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) -- Eric Thames' two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Seattle Mariners a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night and snapped the Tampa Bay Rays' seven-game winning streak. Kyle Seager started the winning rally with a single to right field off Tampa Bay closer Fernando Rodney, and pinch-hitter Chone Figgins pushed a bunt that first baseman Carlos Pena...

Pena's error leads to end of Rays' winning streak

Carlos Pena is usually one of the smoothest Rays on the field. However, he showed he too can be prone to defensive lapses, and his mistake Tuesday cost Tampa Bay the game, and its seven-game winning streak. Pena fielded a ninth-inning bunt and made a horribly errant throw, allowing the Mariners to have runners on second and third with no outs. From there, Seattle scored twice...

Rays' Moore to start against Mariners

In a Tampa Bay rotation led by David Price and James Shields, it might be Matt Moore who is currently throwing the ball best of all. The left-hander tries to win a fourth consecutive start and help the AL wild card-leading Rays extend their season-high winning streak to eight games Tuesday night against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. Moore (9-7, 3.73 ERA), who is 4-1 with...
