Earlier today, I wrote about how Delmon Young would be a terrible fit with the Phillies. Sure enough, about an hour and a half later, Young signed with the Phillies for one year and $750,000, and GM Ruben Amaro said he imagined Young as the team's every day right fielder. Twitter went crazy soon after the signing, with about 95% of people echoing the same viewpoint I had earlier today: that Young was just not a good fit for this team at all. So I decided to borrow a page from Awful Announcing here on the Bloguin network (where I also contribute extensively), and do a search on Twitter for Young's name and see what I came up with. Here are some of the best tweets from mainstream writers, bloggers, and analysts, as well as a few fans, regarding Philadelphia's new right fielder. If Delmon Young's incentives are primarily playing-time based, *he* should be paying *the Phillies* as he reaches them. — Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski) January 22, 2013 Pointing out that Delmon Young can't handle right field is like saying that Olive Garden uses too much salt. — keithlaw (@keithlaw) January 22, 2013 You could do worse than Delmon, sure. An alligator could chew off your leg, and then you'd have no leg AND Delmon Young on your roster. — Jay Jaffe (@jay_jaffe) January 22, 2013 CLIFF LEE WALKED 28 BATTERS LAST YEAR. DELMON YOUNG DREW 20 WALKS LAST YEAR. — NOT BUSTER OLNEY (@TRIPPINGOLNEY) January 22, 2013 Look at the positives guys, Delmon Young pleaded GUILTY to his hate crime charge. The first step to change is always being honest! — Zoo With Roy (@zoowithroy) January 22, 2013 Worth noting again that DET wanted to get "more athletic" by signing 37 year old Torii Hunter instead of keeping 27 year old Delmon Young. — The Good Phight (@TheGoodPhight) January 22, 2013 If Darin Ruf and Delmon Young will be who flank Ben Revere, then Revere's WAR's gonna end up being 584.9999999999 — Tony (@tonyisdynamic) January 22, 2013 LOL. He's the worst there is. @bigleaguestew RT Ruben Amaro says Phillies signed Delmon Young to play right field every day — Bryan Lutz (@BryanLutzRS) January 22, 2013 Delmon Young signs with the Phillies. Thank goodness he's gone. Probably the worst outfielder I've ever seen. Good move #Detroit — John Clark (@JohnnyJohnc023) January 22, 2013 Wow, Delmon Young? Even if you've got rose tinted glasses and credit him with an Age 27 bump, you've got a bad player on your hands. — Kevin O'Brien (@PhillyFriar) January 22, 2013 To recap: Phillies will ask Delmon Young to play a position he has not played since 2007. He is unsure whether he can play field in spring. — Matt Gelb (@magelb) January 22, 2013 Also: He sucked. MT @jimbowdenespnxm: Delmon Young goes from $6.75m in '12 to $750K in '13 because of off-the-field issues. Lesson for all. — Matt Sullivan (@sporkless) January 22, 2013 And he is bad at baseball. RT"@clearthecrease: Delmon Young tho? He's fat & his stache is super creepy." — Bro Schembechler (@SoFla_Wolverine) January 22, 2013 Banner offseason. Let's pretend defense, OBP don't exist! “@joshwood: @karabellespn Michael ***and*** Delmon Young? Ouch.” — Eric Karabell (@karabellespn) January 22, 2013 But hey, aside from all of that...great signing! [follow]
