Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Let me start this off by saying that I’m fully aware the odds are still against this Pirates team. It’s going to be hard to do much of anything with such a meager offense, and the pitching probably won’t be top-5 all season. Plus–especially after last year–we’re all going to be waiting for a collapse…because they’re the Pirates. Regardless, after all the doom and gloom that was surrounding this team after two series losses last week, here’s a more optimistic take on things:
We heard all about how the Pirates faced a rough schedule early on, and that has certainly proved to be the case. The Pirates entered Monday’s action tied for the second-toughest strength-of-schedule rank in the NL, and the only two NL teams they haven’t played yet are two of the three worst (Padres and Brewers). The other one of those three is the Cubs, who the Pirates play thirteen more times. If the Pirates can take care of business against the teams they should beat (which would require them get...

The #Pirates have recalled INF Jordy Mercer from AAA Indy & have optioned INF Yamaico Navarro to Triple-A.

I definitely approve of this move. And hopefully it means that Mercer will be replacing Clint Barmes as the Pirates’ every day short stop for the foreseeable future, relegating Barmes to the bench.
Mercer, 25, was the Pirates’...

It’s been a wet and rainy day in Pittsburgh, but the Bucs and Reds will at least try to get game two of this series in tonight. The Pirates will be looking to go over .500 and creep within two games of Cincinnati.
The Pirates called up Triple-A shortstop Jordy Mercer...
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- James McDonald scattered five hits over eight shutout innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 on Monday to climb back to .500.
Pedro Alvarez, Rod Barajas and Neil Walker all had two hits apiece and knocked in a run for the Pirates, who have won a season-high four straight to improve to 24-24.
It was more than enough for McDonald (4-2)...
Cincy couldn't figure out ole' McDonald on Monday
The NL Central-leading Reds (27-21) strolled into the Steel City on Monday as arguably the hottest team in all of baseball. However, you certainly wouldn't have thought that after watching the pesky Pirates (24-24) down them by a tally of 4-1 on a steamy affair at PNC Park.
Pittsburgh starter James McDonald...
The Bucs kept on rolling on this hot Memorial Day afternoon, cruising to a 4-1 victory over (previously) red-hot Cincinnati for their fourth victory in a row.
What else can I say about James McDonald? He was excellent yet again today and continues to solidify his spot at the top of this rotation–and if he keeps pitching like this, at the top of the league in terms of numbers....
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Jay Bruce had three hits, including a pair of doubles, Todd Frazier drove in two runs to cap an eventful day and the Cincinnati Reds cruised by the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-1 on Tuesday night.
Homer Bailey (4-3) gave up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out four while pitching his second career complete game.
Frazier doubled and tripled in his first...
Welllll that was fun! James McDonald continues to be the best pitcher on the team and the bats were really quite good yesterday. It also looks like Pedro Alvarez is heating up. If you’re in the mood for some reading, check out this article I wrote yesterday about Deven Merrero. Anyway the Pirates are .500, not [...]
There seems to be considerable consensus building that the Pittsburgh Pirates will select Deven Merrero in the 2012 Rule IV draft. Merrero is a shortstop out of Arizona State who has a legit glove, but a weak bat. Now I could make the case on why I think they shouldn’t take him, but it’s already [...]
After a win over the Pirates (24-25), the Reds (28-21) moves to 7 games over .500 (.571) increasing their lead in the NL Central by two games. Homer Bailey looked absolutely awesome, pitching a 4 hit, 1 run complete game on 103 pitches.
The Reds have won 17 of their last 27 games (.629) and are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now. Meanwhile, the Cardinals (13-29 .464...
