The Alfredo Aceves Train of Terror -- All Aboaaaaard!
Boston lost the Orioles. Again. Except this time it took 12 innings. Final score: 9-6.
Things were going fairly well for Boston (after Cook gave up his 9 hits and 5 runs in 5.1 innings)... until the Alfredo Aceves train of terror rolled onto the mound. Aceves gave up two doubles and a single in the 12th, and all 3 runs scored in the final frame for the O's were his. This was also the 10th loss on Aceve's record this season.
Sandwiched between Cooks and Aceve's bookends of bad pitching, the Sox used 6 pitchers who allowed just 2 hits and 1 run between them while striking out 9. No complaints there. Carpenter cleaned up Alfredo's mess, so in all the Sox threw 9 pitchers on the mound. Thank God for September call-ups.
The offense held their own tonight, as well, as each batter got at least one hit. Ciriaco, Pedroia, Aviles, Nava and Podsednk each had 2. Danny Valencia hit the lone home run for Boston (a 2-run shot), with Ross, Lavarnway and Podsednik driving the rest of the runs home.
At least the Sox are making the Yankees sweat as the season winds down. Hooray!

Bobby Valentine has been seen sniffing baseballs during games when he makes a pitching change. He recently tried to explain his weird habit.
Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine's words. Each game day, we will select a Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. After every series, we'll take stock of how each individual and group performance affects their overall value.
Pedro Ciriaco: Pedro's best showing came in game 3. Aside from that, He had a tough time at the plate in the series. I would go into any detail about his play in the outfield.
Jacoby Ellsbury: Jacoby looked great from the 2-spot in the series. After...
Jon Lester pitched an OK game. The offense couldn't get across the plate. Sox lose 4-2 to Baltimore.
The good news is that the Sox didn't lose this game in any kind of heart-breaking fashion. Just a good old boring loss. Not much to say about the game, really. Lester threw 7 mediocre innings, giving up 8 hits, walking 3 O's with only 3 K's. All 4...
BOSTON -- Dustin Pedroia was scheduled for a day off. With the team charter landing in Boston at 4 a.m. on Friday from St. Petersburg, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine planned to give the second baseman a breather in the series opener against the Orioles to spend time alongside his newborn child. "I was thinking about playing [Mike Aviles] at second base today and giving Dustin...
Clay Buchholz didn't have the first half that he wanted, but he's made up for it with a stellar second half. Although Buchholz won eight games before the All-Star break, he had a 5.53 ERA. Since that point, he's won just three games in 13 starts, but his ERA has been rock-solid at 2.93. So what's been the difference for Boston's right-hander? Buchholz says that...

Tired? Who said Felix Doubront was tired? Despite having soared beyond his career-high total for innings in a season, and despite struggling badly for seven starts after the All-Star break, Doubront remained in the Boston Red Sox's rotation and tossed his third consecutive gem Sunday. Making his 28th start, Doubront took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, set a career high...

Overlooked by the likes of Bryce Brentz and Jackie Bradley, there was an outfielder in the lower minors leagues of the Red Sox system in Keury De La Cruz that had Greenville Drive fans coming out to watch each night. De La Cruz, 20 was one of the most improved players in the Boston farm [...]
The Orioles knew they would have a pretty good chance Saturday if they could force their matinee against the Red Sox into extra innings. Boston hasn't been so great past the ninth inning this year, while the O's have now won 16 in a row in extras. The Orioles have built their playoff-hopeful season on pulling out close wins and getting production from their call-ups. On Sunday...
Cody Ross doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Andrew Bailey escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and the Boston Red Sox ended Baltimore's six-game winning streak, beating the Orioles 2-1 Sunday.
The Orioles began the day one game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East and two games ahead of Oakland for the top wild-card spot in the league.
BOSTON - Almost any contending team would take a 6-3 September road trip that starts on the West Coast and ends in Boston. But the Orioles lamented that a chance to go 7-2 and go back into a tie for first place slipped through their fingers at Fenway Park Sunday. The 2-1 loss to the out-of-the-money Red Sox cost the Birds a chance to catch the Yankees for the American League East...
