It's safe to say Andrew Bailey has reached embattled territory. So, yes: The Embattled Andrew Bailey came in for the 9th with a one-run lead in Detroit tonight. He threw three straight balls to Victor Martinez, got one over, and then walked Martinez. Jhonny Peralta stepped to the plate and promptly dispatched what appeared to me to be a 1-2 hanging breaking ball over the left field fence to walk off with the win (copyright Don Orsillo). Jonny Gomes expressed the feelings of Red Sox fans everywhere by watching the ball go over the fence, and slumping down to put his hands on his knees. It can be difficult to come out of these spells in Boston; we've seen our fair share of players (and especially relief pitchers) who never do. Hopefully Bailey won't go too crazy. He has to be quietly pleased with the media storm surrounding the other teams, what with the Bruins in the finals, Aaron Hernandez reaching OJ territory in coverage today, and Doc Rivers doing whatever it is exactly he's trying to do. Normally there'd be a lot more heat on Bailey. John Lackey pitched well but now gets a no decision for his seven-inning, two-run effort. He walked one, gave up seven hits, and struck out five. Perhaps most importantly, he needed just 98 pitches to get through seven. Koji Uehara pitched a perfect 8th, as he is wont to do. David Ortiz led the team offensively with two hits, including a monster shot in the 4th to right field. The Tigers starter, Jose Alvarez, had struggled to throw strikes to that point and Ortiz jumped on the first pitch he saw. Jose Iglesias reached base twice, walking and tripling.
