The Red Sox failed to clinch a playoff spot tonight as the Orioles finally got to Koji Uehara. Koji retired 37 consecutive batters over what feels like all summer until Danny Valencia (remember him?) came up in the 9th in a tie ballgame, and hit a triple to center field. One batter later, Matt Wieters poked a fly ball to right to knock him in, and the Orioles prevailed 3-2 after Jim Johnson closed out Boston in the 9th. The triple was pretty lame -- Koji has every right to be upset with Shane Victorino. Shane got a bad jump and took an odd route to the ball, appeared to have it sized up anyway, and then just missed the catch. He was then pretty lackadaisacal about picking it up off the ground next to the fence, which helped Valencia get to third with ease.  The Sox did put together a decent rally in the 9th, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia singling and pinch runner Quintin Berry advancing into scoring position, but Xander Bogaerts couldn't drive him home and that was that. The Sox wasted a good start from Ryan Dempster, who went six innings and gave up just two runs. He walked four, but, come on, it's Ryan Dempster. We'll take it.  The offense was the problem tonight. (Well, in addition to Victorino's center field escapades.) The Sox mustered just two hits in the first eight innings, both off starter Scott Feldman. The vaunted Orioles bullpen shut down the Sox in late innings, including a showdown at bat between Brian Matusz and David Ortiz in which Matusz continued to challenge Papi with fastballs until he could no longer foul them off. So to recap, the champagne stays on ice, Koji Uehara is human, and you can't win 'em all. Box score
