Two mediocre pitchers faced off in Rick Porcello and Ryan Dempster in the series finale vesus the Tigers. You know what that means? Home run deby. If you had tickets in right field, you picked a great night for a lot of action. Not only were there multiple bombs to right field, but Shane Victorino went falling into the stands to make a catch. Nothing Jeter-esque, but still not bad. Stephen Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury, and David Ortiz went yard for the Sox early on, while Prince Fielder counter-attacked with a shot of his own (all to right). Then came the 6th inning, where Porcello's troubles escalated and the Red Sox offense took advantage. The Sox worked the bases loaded and Mike Carp walked in a run to make it 6-4 Red Sox. But then Will Middlebrooks stepped to the plate and broke it wide open with a grand slam. I can't tell you what a relief it's been watching this kid work his way back to the majors and finally delievering. He's going to be special in the playoffs (please don't collapse), mark my words. A special moment also occured in the 6th, as David Ortiz collected his 2,000th career hit with a double to left field. The game was briefly paused as David Ortiz received a well-deserved standing ovation from Fenway. My only beef is that no "Pa-pi" chant developed after. Bats aside, Dempster was just okay. His line: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K on 100 pitches. You can't get too upset about his performance. He pitched like a number five starter who got by one of the best teams in the majors. The Red Sox totaled eight home runs versus the World Series favorite Tigers. This is a pretty incredible run we're seeing here. The Red Sox' tough schedule continues tomorrow as they travel to the Bronx. Jake Peavy takes the mound for the Sox, as Ivan Nova counters for the Yankees. First pitch is at 7:05pm Box Score
