To sum this one up, Darnell McDonald was the losing pitcher. Both teams exhausted their bullpens and the Orioles' first baseman, Chris Davis came up with the winning pitcher in the 9-6 Orioles 17 inning victory to complete the sweep. After 6+ hours of baseball, the Sox are tired and will have no rest for the next 2 weeks.

The Red Sox looked doomed after falling 5-0 in the 4th, but came back with 1 in the bottom of the 4th. Mike Aviles doubled to center and way brought home by way of a Ryan Sweeney single. Will Middlebrooks gave the fans a taste of what we have been seeing in Pawtucket. Middlebrooks hit one of those 4-run home runs that is called nothing else in the bottom of the 5th to tie things up at 5. The Orioles scored 1 in the 8th and was quickly answered by 1 in the bottom of the 8th when Salty drove in McDonald (who pinch ran for Ortiz) by way of a sac fly. It stayed that way until the 17th when Adam Jones hit a 3-run homer off of Darnell McDonald. The Sox had a chance against Orioles first baseman, Chris Davis, but could not capitalize.

Aside from Middlebrooks, there were very few positives to take away from this game. Let's take a look at some of them before we look at the negatives.

  • The bullpen looked pretty good in this one. Miller, Albers, Padilla, Aceves, Morales, Hill, and Atchison, combined for 12 1/3 innings giving up 6 hits and 1 run. I'll take that any day.
  • Ryan Sweeney went 4-for-8, bringing his average up to .368.
  • Middlebrooks only went 2-for-7, but did have the huge grand slam in the 5th.

The negatives

  • Adrian Gonzalez went 0-for-7 with 2 K's, One of those K's was against Chris Davis. Awful.
  • Clay Buchholz only went 3 2/3, giving up 7 hits, 5 runs (all earned), 4 walks, 3 homers, but did strike out 4. His ERA is now 9.09.
  • The team committed 3 errors, 2 by Salty, 1 by Middlebrooks.

I'll stop picking through the negatives, I can't take much more.

The Red Sox are now 7.5 games behind Baltimore (could be worse), and will hopefully redeem themselves against the Royals.
